Softball Sweeps Hampton Inn Invite

BUIES CREEK, N.C. – Campbell completed a 4-0 sweep of the Hampton Inn of Dunn Invitational Saturday with 11-1 (5 innings) and 7-6 (8 innings) wins over George Washington and Seton Hall Saturday at Amanda Littlejohn Stadium.

Campbell begins 4-0 on the season, marking the program's first 4-0 start since 2004. George Washington fell to 1-2 and Seton Hall dipped to 2-2 after the losses.

Campbell kicked off the first by pushing three runs across, first on an RBI groundout from Sarah Forgacs. Stephanie Jones and Courtney Klingler then scored on a George Washington fielding error off the bat of Raven Lee.

After GWU put up a run in the third, the first allowed by the Camels in the tournament, Campbell scored another two runs in the bottom of the inning on an Olivia Scarborough homer, 5-1.

The Camels added another three runs in the fourth on an RBI single from Sarah Forgacs and a 2-RBI double from Scarborough. Klingler tacked on another three-run home run in the bottom of the fifth to win it for the Camels 11-1, scoring Brittany Bruce and Ericka Nesbitt.

Scarborough (1-0) earned the win over GWU, allowing a run on five hits with two strikeouts and a walk in five innings.

Meghan Rico was charged with the loss, allowing five runs, three earned, on four hits with five walks and two punchouts in 2 1/3 innings. Chelsey Pedley surrendered six runs, all earned, in relief on seven hits with two walks in 1 1/3 innings.

In the nightcap, Seton Hall jumped out front with five runs in the first off home runs from Danielle Destaso and Brittany Hammer, plus an RBI single from Alex Rabbetts.

Campbell answered in the bottom of the winning when Bruce notched a two-on, one out RBI single. With two away in the inning, Lee singled to center, driving in Jones and Camise Patterson.

Trailing 5-3 in the second, Kailey Farmer's solo homer brought the Camels back within 5-4. Campbell then knotted the game at 5-all in the third, with Lee driving in Klingler on a sacrifice fly.

Still tied in the top half of the seventh, Danielle Dastaso homered to right center to put the Pirates ahead 6-5.

With one on and two out in the bottom of the frame, Klingler's RBI single scored Bruce to tie the score at 6-all and sent the game into extras.

After Julia Callicutt got the Camels out of the eighth unscathed, Forgacs was intentionally walked to put runners on first and second with none out. After a fly out, Scarborough's pinch hit RBI fielder's choice scored Maggie Christopher to win it for the Camels, 7-6 in extras.

Callicutt picked up the win in relief, tossing an inning with a strikeout and a walk. Brittany Arnn pitched 6 2/3 innings with five strikeouts, two walks, a hit and an earned run for CU.

Jen Metzger was charged with the loss, going 4 1/3 with two runs, one earned, four strikeouts and two walks. Dastaso recorded five runs, three earned, on six hits with four strikeouts and a walk in three innings.
