Softball Clinches Mid-Week Sweep of Charlotte

BUIES CREEK, N.C. - Campbell notched the sweep of Charlotte with a 3-1 victory in game two after junior designated player Olivia Scarborough (Buies Creek, N.C.) hit a walk-off home run with one out in the bottom of the seventh to lift Campbell, 6-5, in the first contest on Wednesday at Amanda Littlejohn Stadium.

In the sixth of game one, freshman catcher Courtney Klingler (Alvin, Texas) blasted a solo homer to put the Camels (14-8) up 5-4 before the 49ers (11-9) plated a game-tying unearned run in the seventh. The round trippers were the fifth of the season for both Scarborough and Klingler.

Freshman hurler Courtney Roberts (Simpsonville, S.C.) improved her mark to 6-3 with three strikeouts in registering her fifth complete-game of the year. Falling to 6-7 on the campaign was Katie Watkins, who went the distance and stuck out three.

Notching two base knocks and one RBI for the Camels was junior first baseman Raven Lee (Battleboro, N.C.) to lead the offense, while sophomore second baseman Maggie Christopher (Awendaw, S.C.) notched a two-run single to cap the four-run first inning.

The Camels took advantage of back-to-back-to-back walks in the first drawn by Klingler, sophomore center fielder Stephanie Jones (Black Mountain, N.C.) and senior right fielder Sarah Forgacs (Cary, N.C.). Sophomore shortstop Ericka Nesbitt (Salisbury, N.C.), who beat-out an infield single, was forced home for the first run of the contest.

Accounting for five of the six runs in the doubleheader for Charlotte was first baseman Kalie Lang, who hit two-run homers in the second and fourth inning of game one and blasted a solo shot in the fifth of game two. The 49ers only other run in the doubleheader came via a defensive miscue by the Camels with two outs in the seventh.

In game two, a native of Danville Va., senior Brittany Arnn, tossed a complete game with three strikeouts to even her record at 2-2. The loss was tagged to Chelsea Lisikatos (4-1), who limited the Campbell offense to two hits, while fanning four in six innings of work.

All the scoring for Campbell occurred in the first inning as three runs crossed the plate with only one being charged as earned. Consecutive hit batters by Lisikatos to load the bases proved costly as Nesbitt scored the first run for the Camels off the bat of Forgacs.

Lee forced in a run on a fielder's choice, and heads up base running on delayed steal enabled for Forgacs to cross the plate for the third run of the game.

Natalie Capone registered two hits for the 49ers as the team totaled seven, but Arnn was able to pitch through a couple of jams to force Charlotte to strand seven base runners.

The pair of sophomore Camise Patterson (Fuquay Varina, N.C.) and freshman Haley Haselden (Aynor, S.C.) earned starts, their second and first, respectively, in left field. Haselden made a momentum-changing diving catch moving toward the left field line for the second out in the fourth inning of game two with a runner on first base.

Campbell begins Big South play on Friday with a doubleheader against Gardner-Webb at 4 p.m. The finale of the series is on Saturday at noon. Live stats and fee audio for the entire series is available on GoCamels.com.
