Women's Tennis Falls at Coastal, 5-2

CONWAY, S.C. – Junior Karolina Chernaya (Tashkent, Uzbekistan) and freshman Ana Maria Ortiz (Betera, Spain) notched singles wins for Campbell in a 5-2 loss at Coastal Carolina on Wednesday afternoon.

The Camels sent three matches into the decisive third set, but Chernaya, 6-3, was the only Campbell (4-10, 2-2 Big South) player to come up with a victory at the Billy Nichols Tennis Center. Libby Scott, 6-4, at No. 1 clinched the match for Coastal Carolina (8-6, 4-1 Big South) and a 6-3 third-set win by Dominique Dewit at No. 6 provided the final 5-2 score.

Coastal Carolina won two of the three doubles matches, but sophomore Tamara Stanic (Budva, Montenegro) and Chernaya at No. 1 tallied an 8-5 victory in the tiebreaker to conclude the competition. Ortiz and partner junior Natasha Afridi (Tokyo, Japan) fought hard at No. 2 but fell, 8-6.

A straight-set, 6-1, 6-4, victory was registered by Ortiz at No. 3 to pull Campbell within one, 2-1, early in the singles competition. Kortney Kowal put the Chanticleers up 3-1 following a 6-2, 6-4 win in the fourth slot.

Campbell continues Big South play on Saturday at Longwood with the first serve set for 1:30 p.m. The Camels return to the Nisbet Tennis Center on Mar. 29 against UNC Asheville at 2 p.m.
