Softball Falls in Walk-Off at Coastal Carolina

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – Jessie Winans sent a 1-0 pitch over the fence in left during the bottom of the seventh to propel Coastal Carolina to a walk-off win against Campbell, 6-4, on Saturday at Carolina Forest High School. The Camels knotted the contest at four in the top half of the frame with a pinch hit RBI by junior Casey Taylor (Lillington, N.C.) to drive home sophomore Kerstine Womack (Broadway, N.C.).

In the rubber match of the series, Coastal Carolina (18-12-5-1 Big South) took the lead, 4-2, in the fourth on a two-run homer by Paige Goldsack. Campbell (18-11, 4-2 Big South) started its comeback by cutting the deficit to one in the fifth on a fielding miscue that allowed sophomore second baseman Maggie Christopher (Awendaw, S.C.) to score.

The 10th home run of the season for Kory Hayden of Coastal Carolina put it on top 1-0 in the first.

Fighting back were the Camels with a two-run second inning to take their first lead, 2-1. After sophomore third baseman Brittany Bruce (Lumberton, N.C.) was hit by a pitch, junior first baseman Raven Lee (Battleboro, N.C.) delivered an RBI single to left.

A game-changing play happened next as sophomore left fielder Kailey Farmer (Durham, N.C.) sent a high fly towards the fence in left as Beth Kassuhn's glove was over the fence and guided the ball back into the field of play off the top of the fence for an RBI double that put two runners in scoring position.

Another stellar defensive play by Kassuhn happened two batters later as senior Sarah Forgacs (Cary, N.C.) sent a fly ball to left with a runner on third. Kassuhn made the catch and fired a bullet to the plate as the catcher applied the tag for the final out.

It was the second double play that the Chanticleers recorded in consecutive innings to stop a Camels' threat. Forgacs and Christopher reached base before a double play killed a rally in the first.

In the circle, Kiana Quolas notched her second complete-game victory of the series against the Camels with six strikeouts in seven innings.

Senior Brittany Arnn (Danville, Va.) was tagged with the loss after tossing three innings and fanning three. The starter for Campbell was sophomore Julia Callicutt (Asheboro, N.C.) threw 3.1 innings and yielded three earned runs.

Pacing the game with two hits and her sixth multi-hit game of the year was Lee.

The contest was originally set to be played at 11 a.m., but the start time was pushed back to 7 p.m. because of rain in the area.

Campbell returns to Amanda Littlejohn Stadium on Monday for a doubleheader against N.C. Central beginning at 4 p.m. The Camels host North Carolina on Wednesday at 6 p.m. to continue a seven-game homestand.
