FLORENCE, S.C. – The Campbell women's tennis team improved to 3-7 on the campaign with a 5-0 victory over Bethune-Cookman in Florence, S.C. on Monday. The Camels posted four singles victories by freshmen Ana Maria Ortiz (Betera, Spain) and Kirsten Renz (Greensboro, N.C.), junior Karolina Chernaya (Tashkent, Uzbekistan) and senior Lourdes Ros (Greensboro, N.C).
The doubles competition started off the morning as Ortiz and junior Natasha Afridi (Tokyo, Japan) cruised to an 8-0 win at No. 1 vs. Ancia Ifill and Victoria Galyaeva. Campbell clinched the first point of the contest with an 8-3 triumph by freshman Ewa Telenga (Gliwice, Poland) and Telenga at No. 3.
Breezing through her singles opponent, Ifill, 6-0, 6-2 was Oritz at No. 1. The Camels took a 3-0 advantage following a 6-0, 6-3 win at No. 5 by Ros.
Chernaya clinched the match at No. 2 by topping Maria Dimitrova, 6-3, 6-3 in straight sets. The final point was notched by Renz in a third set super tiebreaker, 10-7, at No. 6 against Beresiarte.
Campbell continues Big South play on Tuesday at Charleston Southern at 2 p.m. The Camels open a three-match homestand on Mar. 9 against Radford at 11 a.m.
