ROCK HILL, S.C. - Freshman Courtney Roberts (Simpsonville, S.C.) and sophomore Julia Callicutt (Asheboro, N.C.) combined for 12 strikeouts in 6-0 and 2-0 shutouts at Winthrop on Tuesday evening at Terry Field. A 6-of-8 performance with one RBI at the plate by sophomore shortstop Ericka Nesbitt (Salisbury, N.C.) paced the Camels.
Campbell swept the Big South series against the Eagles to move to 30-16 overall and 14-4 in the league after taking game one, 3-1, on April 3 at Amanda Littlejohn Stadium. Winthrop fell to 21-23 on the campaign and an even 9-9 in league play.
In game one, Roberts tossed a two-hit complete game with six strikeouts to increase her record to 16-6 on the season. Callicutt (7-1) was just as impressive in the second contest, allowing just four hits and fanning five, while going the distance.
The Campbell defense did not commit a mistake in the doubleheader as Nesbitt paced the team with six assists.
A statement was made by the Camels in the first after scoring three runs on six hits. RBI singles were contributed by Nesbitt, freshman catcher Courtney Klingler (Alvin, Texas) and sophomore left fielder Camise Patterson (Fuquay-Varina, N.C.).
The only homer blasted by Campbell during the two games came from Patterson in the fourth, her third of the season.
Two more runs were tacked on in the seventh with a stolen base by Nesbitt at second, allowing sophomore center fielder Stephanie Jones (Black Mountain, N.C.) to cross the plate and an RBI base knock to center by senior right fielder Sarah Forgacs (Cary, N.C.).
Roberts, who allowed just six base runners in the contest with only one reaching third base, was effective in changing speeds and locations throughout the contest.
In similar fashion to the game played in Buies Creek, a pitching duel developed in the second contest with Sutton Watson in the circle for the Eagles. Both squads did notched a hit in the first.
The third inning saw the lead-off batter in junior second baseman Shaela Churchill (Winterville, N.C.) reach base on a throwing error. A one-out single through the left side by Nesbitt moved the runner into scoring position.
Klinger came through with a productive groundout to place two runners in scoring position with two outs. Back-to-back singles by Forgacs and junior first baseman Raven Lee (Battleboro, N.C.) scored the two unearned runs that proved to be the difference in the contest.
Winthrop had its best chance to solve Callicutt in the sixth as a hit batter and double to left center by McKenzi Corn put the game-tying run at second with two outs. Callicutt was up to the challenge by inducing a ground ball to second to end the threat.
The game one loss was charged to Chelsey Shoenfeldt (3-6), who gave up five earned runs and fanned eight batters. Sutton Watson (12-12) fell in game two, while notching seven strikeouts and giving up no earned runs.
Registering two hits in the second contest was Corn, who saw a 19-game hit streak snapped in the first game.
The 30 wins matches the Campbell win total from a season ago as the squad finished 30-29.
The Camels continue a 10-game road swing with a doubleheader on Friday beginning at 4 p.m. at Radford. Links to live stats, free audio and subscription video can be found on the schedule page of GoCamels.com
