2013 USA Track & Field Championships Results
BUIES CREEK, N.C. – Campbell's assistant track & field coach Ryan Grinnell will be competing in the men's triple jump on Thursday, June 20 at the 2013 USA Outdoor Track & Field Championships in Des Moines, Iowa.
The 2013 USA Outdoor Track & Field Championships will be held at Drake Stadium, on the campus of Drake University, on June 20-23.
The men's triple jump will be at 7:00 p.m. EST on Thursday, and the top three finishers, along with the defending champion who has an automatic bid, will represent the United States as they compete at the 2013 IAAF World Championships on Aug. 10-18 in Moscow, Russia.
Grinnell (Idaho Falls, Idaho) will be attending his fifth consecutive USA Outdoor Track & Field Championship after his recent performance at the 2013 Powerade State Games of North Carolina Track and Field on June 9 in Charlotte, N.C.
Grinnell posted a U.S. A Standard qualifying mark of 16.41 meters (53' 10.25") and claimed the top spot in the triple jump at the Powerade State Games, his first triple jump competition in 2013. For the U.S., the B standard is 16.27 meters and the A standard in 16.30 meters.
For the men's triple jump at the USA Outdoor Track & Field Championships, Grinnell's 16.41 meters holds the ninth best mark in the nation heading into the event, with 17.55 meters being the top jump in 2013.
"Even though my mark from last year's U.S. Olympic Trials was good enough to qualify for U.S trials this year, It was such a huge confidence boost and it felt much more gratifying to hit that A standard and automatically qualify," said Grinnell.
Grinnell competed at the 2012 U.S. Olympic Trials in Eugene, Ore. in the men's triple jump, where he finished in 12th place in the finals after fouling all three jump attempts.
"I'm in good physical shape, but I'm the stronger mentally than I have ever been", stated Grinnell. "I've continued to train with my busy schedule, but the kids come first."
"Coaching here at Campbell has helped me tremendously. When I'm coaching, I have to break down every step for every jump, and it allows me to look at it from a different perspective," said Grinnell. "The confidence boost started to hit me when the results were improving each meet, and the team believed in my coaching."
Grinnell has been primarily lifting weights and working out on the track on his own, but credits Campbell assistant coach O'Neil Wright with some very helpful pointers on technique and University of Georgia assistant Petros Kyprianou for workout recommendations and training tips.
Grinnell arrived in Buies Creek in September, when he was named assistant track & field coach, where he uses his knowledge and experience to lead the Camels in all field events and multi's (jumps, throws, and multi's).
Before arriving at Campbell, Grinnell spent two and half years (2010-2012) serving as a volunteer track & field coach at the University of Georgia. During his time in Georgia, Grinnell trained with Petros Kyprianou, his coach from Boise State University who will be accompanying him at the 2013 USA Outdoor Championship.
Grinnell has a long list of accolades from his college career that includes six Big Sky Championships while at the University of Montana and nine Western Athletic Conference Championships at Boise State. He is also a six-time NCAA Track and Field All-American (four times in triple jump, once in high jump, and once in long jump).
Grinnell still holds school records at both Montana and Boise State, as well as the Men's Outdoor Track and Field WAC Championship record for triple jump.
