Campbell junior Grant Houser tees off Monday at the Charles River Country Club in the first round of the U.S. Amateur Championship.
Houser finished second in the U.S. Amateur Sectional Qualifying July 29 at Benvenue Country Club in Rocky Mount, N.C. A 2011 graduate of Holly Springs (N.C.) High School, Houser shot consecutive 69s for a 6-under 138.
Over his two-year collegiate career, Houser has played in 19 events for Campbell. He earned Big South Conference all-academic team and presidential honor roll honors as a sophomore in 2013. In 2012, he was low freshman at the Big South Championship, where he finished 11th.
The Country Club will play to 7310 yards and play to a par of 36-34—70 for the match play portion. The companion stroke-play qualifying course, Charles River Country Club will be set up at 6,574 yards and will play to a par of 35-35–70.
The top 64 golfers after 36 holes of stroke play (Aug. 12-13) will advance to match play. First round match play begins on Wed., Aug. 14, followed by the second and third rounds on Aug. 15. The quarterfinals will be held Aug. 16 and semifinals Aug. 17. The 36-hole final will take place on Sun., Aug. 18.
The U.S. Amateur Championship is the oldest golf championship in this country, one day older than the U.S. Open. Except for an eight-year period, 1965-1972, when it was stroke play, the Amateur has been a match-play championship.
