Ravnjak, Camels claim women's Program Challenge

PAWLEYS ISLAND, S.C. – Tahnia Ravnjak won the women's individual crown and Campbell sophomores Mikko Lehtovuori, Jeremy Milton and Alvaro Veiga played their final hole 4-under par as Campbell claimed a one-stroke victory Tuesday in the Golfweek Program Challenge.

Campbell won the event for the third-straight year, thanks to a 17-stroke victory in the ladies team standings and a strong finish by the men.  Campbell's women finished the 54-hole event at 10-over-par at the par-71, 6038-yard Caledonia Golf & Fish Club, while the men were 15-over on the par-72, 6940-yard True Blue Golf Club.

At a combined 25-over-par, Campbell claimed the team title by one stroke over Jacksonville State (+26), while James Madison finished third (+32).

Campbell shot 290-288-284—862, while second-place Jacksonville State finished at 27-over 879 (297-291-291) in the women's event at Caledonia.  JMU (298-288-297—883) was third.  Campbell's 862 total was the second-lowest in the program's 25-year history, just two strokes behind last year's team (860) showing at the Program Challenge.

CU's final round 284 was only two strokes off the school record 282 the team produced at last year's Palmetto Intercollegiate.

"Our girls played really well and our guys finished well," said head coach John Crooks, whose program won the 2011 title in a one-hole playoff then earned a 24-stroke victory in 2012.  "It just goes to show that every shot makes somebody happy."

Crooks now has 71 career coaching wins on the women's side, second-most among all active coaches on the Division I level.  His team has won seven of its last 13 tournaments dating to the start of the 2012-13 season.

Ravnjak shot collegiate career low rounds Monday and Tuesday and finished the event at two-under-par 211 (76-69-66).  The sophomore from Cordeaux Heights, Australia birdied five of the first 11 holes and had seven birdies on the day en route to tying the school 18-hole record 66 set by Michelle Koh at the 2010 Palmetto Intercollegiate and the school 54-hole mark (211) established by Brooke Bellomy at last year's Program Challenge.

"We fixed a couple of things with my swing after the first round, then yesterday and today I went out and kept steady and made some putts," said Ravnjak, the 2013 Big South Conference freshman of the year who notched her first career win and sixth career top-10 showing.  "It was one of those days where everything – long game, short game, putting – worked together."

Red-shirt junior Ali Prazak produced her best collegiate finish – a second-place tie – at 2-over 215 (70-73-72).  She played the back holes at 4-under par for the tournament, including a one-under showing Tuesday.  Each of Prazak's three rounds this week eclipsed her previous career low for 18 holes and the St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands native recorded her first career top-10 showing.

Junior Lisbeth Brooks finished fifth (69-75-72—216) in the 60-player field despite making the turn at plus-four Tuesday.  The product of Waunakee, Wis., then played the next six holes at 4-under-par to record her 10th top-10 showing of her collegiate career.

"Ali had her best tournament ever," said Crooks.  "She was solid as a rock from tee to fairway to green all week.  Lizzie got off to a rough start, but then got back even."

Senior Kaylin Yost tied for 14th (76-71-74—221), while freshman Louise Latorre tied for 21st (75-75-75—225) in her collegiate debut.

The 54-hole event matches men's and women's teams from 12 schools from around the country.  The combined men's and women's scores from each program are added at the end of the event to determine the overall champion.

Campbell's women return to action Sept. 20-22 at the Mercedes-Benz Collegiate Championship at Holston Hills CC in Knoxville, Tenn.
