ERIE, COLO. – Craig Hornberger of Campbell University finished as runner-up in his first collegiate tournament following Tuesday's final round of the Mark Simpson Colorado Invitational.
A freshman from Lancaster, Pa., Hornberger was one of only three golfers in red numbers in the 84-man event at Colorado National Golf Club. He shot 73-72-70—215 and tied with Blake Snyder of Washington State (76-69-70) five strokes behind medalist Preston Stanley of Houston Baptist (71-70-69—210).
Host Colorado 299-290-293—882) and Washington State (308-288-286) tied for the team championship at 18-over-par 882, one stroke better than Oregon State (306-289-288—883). Campbell moved up five spots to finish eighth (315-297-291—903) in the 16-team event.
Hornberger made 8 birdies and finished in a five-way tie for most pars (39) in the field. Last year's Pennsylvania 3A high school state champion played the par-four holes even, and was 3-under on the par-fives on the par-72, 7771-yard Colorado National layout.
During Tuesday's final round of 70, Hornberger made four birdies. His second round included 16 pars, one birdie and one bogey.
After an opening-round 83, Campbell junior Grant Houser played the final 36 holes at one-over and finished in a tie for 42nd place (83-72-73—228). The Holly Springs, N.C., product played the final 10 holes of his second round at 4-under. On Tuesday afternoon, he had two birdies and a par in his last three holes.
Senior Amanjyot Singh also tied for 42nd place at 12-over 228 (77-74-77). Sophomore Mikko Lehtovuori recovered from a rough Monday to shoot one-under Tuesday (86-80-71—237) and tie for 76th. Sophomore Jeremy Milton shot 82-79-79—240 and tied for 80th.
Campbell returns to action on Oct. 5 with a dual match with Gardner-Webb at The Patriot GC in Ninety Six, S.C., before heading to the Wolfpack Intercollegiate (Oct. 7-8) at Raleigh.
