Camels hold 1st round lead at women's Program Challenge

PAWLEYS ISLAND, S.C. – Paced by individual leader Lisbeth Brooks, Campbell holds a 3-stroke lead after Sunday's first round of the women's Golfweek Program Challenge at Caledonia Golf & Fish Club.

The 54-hole event matches men's and women's teams from 12 schools from around the country.  The combined men's and women's scores from each program are added at the end of the event to determine the overall champion.

A junior from Waunakee, Wisc., Brooks shot two-under-par 69 on the par-71, 6038-yard Caledonia layout Sunday and sits one stroke ahead of teammate Ali Prazak and Stetson's Jenna Hoecker, who both shot one-under 70.

Brooks played the final 14 holes Sunday at 3-under-par and suffered only one bogey on the day.  A red-shirt junior from St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands, Prazak bettered her collegiate career low round by 6 strokes on Sunday in a round that included 13 pars and 3 birdies.

Campbell freshman Louise Latorre is tied for 23rd place at 4-over 75 following her first competitive collegiate round, while sophomore Tahnia Ravnjak and senior Kaylin Yost are tied for 25th at 5-over 76 heading into Monday's second round of the 54-hole tourney.

The Camels shot six-over 290 on Sunday to take a 3-stroke edge over Western Carolina in the 12-school field.

Live scoring is available on-line at Golfstat.com.

In 2012 Campbell won the combined men's and women's Program Challenge with 1738 strokes, 24 fewer than Central Arkansas (1762), which won the 2012 men's tournament at True Blue Golf Club.

Campbell and East Carolina tied, rather improbably, for the 2011 Program Challenge crown, each school shooting a cumulative, 54-hole score of 1,716. Mitch Gray and Michelle Koh combined to win a male and female, alternate shot play-off on the first hole at Caledonia Golf & Fish Club.
