Women's tennis drops pair of 3-2 decisions Friday

RICHMOND, Va. – Campbell senior Karolina Chernaya (Tashkent, Uzbekistan) notched a pair of singles victories in 3-2 losses to Georgetown and VCU on Friday. Junior Tamara Stanic (Budva, Montenegro) and sophomore Ana Maria Ortiz (Betera, Spain) each notched a victory at the VCU 4-1 Invitational.

The all day tournament featured four singles and one doubles contest in each match.

Against the Hoyas, the contest came down to No. 3 singles where Madeline Jaegan of Georgetown (1-0) took a three-set match, 6-1, 2-6, 6-3. Chernaya and Stanic notched singles triumphs at No. 1 and No. 4.

After A. Ortiz dropped a 6-4, 6-1 decision at No. 1, Campbell (0-2) responded to tie the match at one with a 6-4, 6-4 victory by Stanic over Sophie Panarese.

The Hoyas took the lead, 2-1, in doubles play with Saperstein/Koenen downing sophomore Ewa Telenga (Gliwice, Poland) and freshman Amelie Reichart (Ismaning, Germay) in straight sets. A pair of 6-3 triumphs in the first set and third sets by Chernaya against Kelley Comolli pulled the Camels even, 2-2.

VCU (2-0), slotted 39th in the latest ITA rankings, opened a 2-0 advantage vs. Campbell as Chala/Burguiere notched a doubles decision, 6-2, 6-2 against Stanic and senior Natasha Afridi (Tokoyo, Japan). Sitilia Rencheli tallied a 6-1, 6-3 victory over junior Claudia Ortiz (Betera, Spain) at No. 4.

A 6-1, 6-3 victory at No. 3 for Daria Yakauleva against Reichart clinched the match for VCU.

The Camels continued to battle as Chernaya took the first set, 6-2, against Yukako Noi and posted an 8-6 victory in the second set tiebreak.

A. Ortiz won the opening fame with a 7-4 tiebreaker before falling in the second set tiebreaker, 8-6. The Betera, Spain, native scored the second point for Campbell with a 12-10 triumph in the third set super tiebreaker.

The Camels continue the campaign at Wingate on Feb. 1 with the match set to begin at 1 p.m. The first home contest for Campbell is on Feb. 8 at 11 a.m. against South Carolina St.
