BUIES CREEK, N.C. – Reco McCarter of Campbell University has been named the Big South Conference Choice Hotels men's basketball player of the week ending Jan.5.  A red-shirt junior from Goldsboro, N.C., McCarter averaged 21.5 points, 5.0 rebounds and 5.0 assists in two games.

After averaging 7.8 points through Campbell's first 13 games, McCarter exploded for a career-high 29 last Thursday against East Carolina.  The 6-foot-6 forward passed his previous season high (16) in the first half alone with 18 points.  He finished the night 10-of-16 from the floor and 7-of-10 from the line while dealing a season-high 5 assists with no turnovers in 31 minutes against the Pirates.

Two nights later, McCarter had 14 points, 6 rebounds, 5 assists and 3 steals against Delaware State.  On the week, McCarter went 14-of-28 from the field (50 percent) and 13-of-16 from the line (81.3 percent).

The former Wayne Country Day all-state performer raised his season averages to 9.7 points, 3.7 rebounds, 1.7 assists and 1.3 steals.

"Reco had a great week and I am not surprised by his success," said Campbell head coach Kevin McGeehan.  "He is a terrific kid who has been showing improvement in practice for weeks.  I am happy for him and hope he continues to progress and help our team continue to grow."

During his red-shirt sophomore season (2012-13), McCarter averaged 8.0 points and 3.9 rebounds in 32 games for the Camels.  His previous career high scoring total (21 points) came last February against Savannah State.

McCarter joined the Fighting Camels in 2012 as a transfer from Virginia Commonwealth, where he was a member of two Colonial Athletic Association championship teams, including the 2011 Final Four squad.  He was a two-time all-state choice at Wayne Country Day.

Campbell opens Big South Conference play at home Wednesday with a 7:00 p.m. tip-off against pre-season North Division favorite High Point.
