Box Score RADFORD, Va. – Campbell women's soccer played Radford to a draw Wednesday night, 2-2, at Cupp Stadium. The Camels now move to 2-5-3 overall, 0-1-2 in Big South Conference play.
Campbell struck quick in the opening half as sophomore forward Nicole Connolly blasted a shot from 22-yards out and into the top left corner of the goal. The goal was Connolly's second of the season and assisted by senior forward Kellsey Costlello-Mays.
Senior midfielder Alexis Prada tallied her second goal of the season in four minutes later; the shot from 20-yards out deflected off a Highlander defender and into the net.
"I thought we were the better team in the first half; I thought we had more of the play, more opportunity and we were a lot more dangerous," head coach Stuart Horne said. "In the second half Radford came out and had better play. They were chasing the game, and they were chasing hard.
"It's just unfortunate to be up two goals and have to tie. It's a point on the road against the preseason No. 2 team. We're not happy that we're going home without three points, but we're going home with a point."
Radford's Shannon Nasca got the Highlanders on the board after a cross in from Kara Wade in the 48th minute, followed by a goal in the 52nd minute off the foot of Caitlin Annear to tie the game at 2-2.
Freshman midfielder Shelby Denkert saved a sure Radford goal in the late stages of the second half, stopping a Highlander shot at a wide open net. Junior goalkeeper Samantha Lawson was knocked down by a Radford forward, leaving the net wide open, but Denkert cleared it away.
Junior goalkeeper Alexis Connors started in net for the Camels and recorded one save on five shots, but was replaced by Lawson at the start of the second half. Lawson faced 19 shots, seven on goal, in 65 minutes
"We went with Sammy [Lawson] because of what we've seen out of Radford," Horne said. "They started doing things toward the end of the second half that helped that decision."
Sophomore forward Nicole Connolly tallied a career and team-high five shots for Campbell. The team tallied 15 total shots, seven on goal, compared to Radford's 24 shots, ten on goal.
Campbell has earned back-to-back draws with the Liberty and Radford, ranked No. 1 and No. 2 in the Big South preseason rankings, respectively.
"Based on what the coaches have picked, to get points off these teams is pretty good," Horne said. "I think it also shows that we can play with anybody."
The Camels will travel to Gardner-Webb Saturday night to take on the Bulldogs; kickoff is slated for 7 p.m.
