Box Score BUIES CREEK, N.C. – Campbell women's soccer defeated Winthrop, 3-2, on Homecoming Saturday night at Eakes Athletic Complex. Nicole Connolly tallied the first multi-goal game of her collegiate career, scoring twice in the first 50 seconds of the match.
Connolly's first score came only 21 seconds into the match, on a cross from sophomore defender Murita Storey and pass off the foot of senior forward Kellsey Costello-Mays. The Newtonabby, N. Ireland native settled the ball and drilled it into the back of the net.
Twenty-nine seconds later, Connolly located the ball on the far left side of the field just feet inside the midfield line and sent it toward an open right side of the net. The ball nicked the inside of the far right post and dribbled past the goal line.
Winthrop goalkeeper Amelia Henderson left the right side vacant after coming out to play the ball, leaving an open net for Connolly.
"I just saw that the far corner was a little open so I just tried to hit it toward the corner, and it went in," Connolly said. "The second one, I don't even remember it. I just saw the far corner open again. It was like watching a ball go in slow motion, but it went in and we celebrated."
Winthrop cut into the Camels' lead in the 20th minute when sophomore Tori Davis scored on a penalty kick, beating the outstretched junior goalkeeper Alexis Connors.
Redshirt junior forward Ashley Clark answered in the 21st minute, tallying her 7th goal of the season, receiving a feed from freshman defender Shelby Denkert. Clark continues to lead the Camels' in the point column, now with 16 this season.
Sophomore Samantha Prytulak netted Winthrop's second goal in the 35th minute but the Camels held the Eagles scoreless in the second half to secure their fourth Big South Conference victory.
"It was great to get off to a fast start, but at the same time we're cruising and we have 89 minutes to play," head coach Stuart Horne said. "We knew Winthrop wasn't going to give up. They're fighting to get into the tournament and they weren't going to quit."
Senior forward Krystyna Freda—the conference leader in scoring with 31 points (14g, 3a)—was held scoreless Saturday night. Freda was riding a four-game, 14 point (7g) streak headed into the match with Campbell.
"We played well; we cleared the ball relatively well and our backs were getting into the attack," Horne said. "We made an adjustment with our midfielders midway through the first half and everyone played their part."
Connors played all 90 minutes for the Camels and faced nine Winthrop shots, tallying three saves.
The Camels will return home Wednesday to take on the Longwood Lancers at Eakes Athletics Complex; kickoff is slated for 7 p.m.
