Farias' brace spurs Campbell's 2-1 rally at Gardner-Webb

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. - Freshman Bradley Farias netted a pair of goals two minutes apart to spur a second-half rally for Campbell on Saturday evening as the Camels defeated Gardner-Webb 2-1 for their first Big South victory of the season.

Farias found the back of the net in the 66th and 68th minutes to erase the Runnin' Bulldogs' 1-0 lead. The Indiantown, Fla., native got help from senior Bryce Miller on the first goal and scored the second on a solo run after cutting inside the defense.

Gardner-Webb (2-9-1, 0-3-1 BSC) outshot the Camels 17-10 on the night, but Campbell (4-8-0, 1-3-0 BSC) made the most of its chances, putting five of its 10 shots on goal. The Runnin' Bulldogs also led the way in corners, 12-3, but could not create anything off the set piece chances.

Redshirt freshman Matthew Mozynski made three saves in each half to lead the Camels' defensive effort.

Both sides traded shots on goal in the first 20 minutes of action. Gardner-Webb's Patrick Gurser collected a giveaway at the top of the 18-yard box and had the first attempt of the night in the 11th minute, but Mozynski tipped the shot just wide to keep things level.

Freshman Hernan Mogollon and senior Jhuvon Francis tested Runnin' Bulldogs goalkeeper Matthew Swan with two shots less than one minute apart. Mogollon fired a direct free kick that was touched over the bar, while Francis' attempt was stopped later in the 17th minute.

Gardner-Webb's Ali Al-Gashamy gave his squad a 1-0 lead in the 24th minute. Al-Gashamy won control of the ball just past midfield and fired a blast past Mozynski as he charged out to make the save.

Al-Gashamy nearly added to the tally in the 44th minute off a free kick from 25 yards out. He attempted to curl the shot under the bar, but it sailed just high as Gardner-Webb carried the 1-0 lead into halftime.

Farias found the equalizer at 65:44 on a turnover along Gardner-Webb's back line. Miller collected the loose ball and found the freshman in the middle of the box for the one-touch finish and the 1-1 scoreline.

Less than two minutes later, at 67:38, Farias put the Camels ahead on a solo run and a cut inside the defense. The freshman beat Swan at the far left post for the 2-1 lead with just over 20 minutes remaining.

The Runnin' Bulldogs came up with seven shots following Campbell's go-ahead goal, but only a pair of those tested Mozynski. Gurser's attempt in the 73rd minute was stopped on a sliding save by the goalkeeper, and Al-Gashamy's try in the 83rd was collected by Mozynski as well.

Campbell will return to the Eakes Athletics Complex next Saturday, Oct. 25, for a Big South contest against Presbyterian at 5 p.m. Saturday will also serve as Alumni Day for the men's soccer program, with an alumni match set to kick off at 2 p.m. preceding the varsity match.
