Campbell downs Charleston Southern in double overtime, 2-1

Box Score

CHARLESTON, S.C. – Redshirt junior forward Ashley Clark scored with 1:28 remaining in double overtime to give Campbell a 2-1 victory against Charleston Southern Wednesday afternoon.

Clark received a pass from senior forward Kellsey Costello-Mays along the left side of the net and buried it past Charleston Southern's Caitlin Cody for her third goal in two games.

"It was nice to get the win in overtime; we've been going into overtime quite a few games, and it was nice to finally finish it off and get those three points rather than tying," Clark said. "It was awesome to finish it past that keeper. I just looked up and I saw it, and I thought if I could get it a little past her than it's going in.

"We needed the three points because the conference is so tight. Anyone can beat anybody on any given day, so we knew we had to get three points coming down here and we just need to continue getting them as we go on through conference."

Freshman defender Shelby Denkert scored the first goal of her collegiate career in the 19th minute to put the Camels up 1-0.

Denkert pinched in along the left side of the field from her defensive position and found the twine at the bottom right corner of the net, assited by Costello-Mays and sophomore defender Murita Storey. Costlello-Mays, the team leader in assists, tallied two helpers.

The Buccaneers answered in the 55th minute on header from Erica Gazzani from a corner kick taken by Emma Faubert.

Charleston Southern recorded 21 shots, ten on goal. The Camels tallied a season-high 20 shots against the Bucs', 12 on goal.

"It's great to win one of those, especially in conference," head coach Stuart Horne said. " To get the three points and really work hard to get the three points, it wasn't easy. Charleston Southern fought, and the goal they scored, the girl just put it away. They came out to play and I knew it was going to be tough.

"It was kind of a bittersweet win because I know we didn't play our best but we fought and played hard enough to come away with an overtime win."

Junior goalkeeper Alexis Connors stopped a season-high nine shots and improved her record to 3-1-2 this season.

The Camels return home to host Presbyterian Saturday at 7 p.m. at Eakes Athletics Complex. Campbell will play four of its last five remaining games this season at home.

"We have the best bus driver in the world, but I wouldn't mind seeing him until next week," Horne said. "I just want to be back at Eakes, and I want the hill filled. I want to see them running all over the place going crazy. I just want to be at home."
