Campbell falls 3-1 to Winthrop

BUIES CREEK, N.C. - Junior Cameron Mulvey netted his second goal of the season in the 64th minute, but Campbell could not overcome a pair of first-half goals by Winthrop in a 3-1 defeat at the Eakes Athletics Complex on Saturday evening.

The Eagles improve to 11-4-1 (5-2-1 BSC) on the season, while Campbell drops to 5-10-0 (2-5-0 BSC). Winthrop also snapped an 11-match winning streak in the series by the Camels with the victory.

Both sides saw chances throughout the match and were tied 7-7 in shots on goal. Redshirt freshman Matthew Mozynski made four saves for Campbell, while Fabian Broich tallied six for the Eagles. Winthrop also held a slim 4-3 advantage in corner kicks.

Through the first 20 minutes of the match, neither side could find much room. Winthrop's Cody Winter and Pol Sole had a pair of shots blocked by Campbell defenders, while Campbell's lone chance came from senior Scooter Oliver in the 14th minute as his shot sailed high.

CJ Miller of the Eagles was the first to put a shot on goal, testing Mozynski in the 22nd minute but failing to get past the Bellingham, Mass., native. Senior Jhuvon Francis responded with a chance of his own six minutes later, but Broich was able to collect the save.

Mozynski parried a shot wide left of the goal by Winthrop's Patrick Barnes in the 36th minute, setting up a corner kick from the left side. Sole lined it up and sent it directly into the top right corner of the net in the windy conditions, scoring directly off the corner to give Winthrop a 1-0 lead at 35:58.

Less than one minute later, Francis again came up with a scoring opportunity for the Camels with his head, but Broich batted it high to maintain the 1-0 advantage.

Winthrop added to its lead just before halftime with a goal from Max Hasenstab at 41:46. Magnus Thorsson found a rushing Hasenstab up the middle with a pass from midfield, and Hasenstab found the top left of the net from 20 yards out as the Eagles took a 2-0 lead into halftime.

Mulvey entered as a substitute in the 57th minute and had an immediate impact for the Camels. Junior Reafe Anderson had a long solo run up the right side, spinning off Winthrop defenders before finding freshman Bradley Farias in the middle of the box. Farias flipped the ball back out to Mulvey at the top of the penalty area and the Fuquay-Varina, N.C., native buried a strike past Broich into the lower right corner, cutting Winthrop's lead to 2-1 at 63:45.

In the 81st minute, the Eagles were able to find an insurance goal off the foot of Charles Coulson. Sole and Hasenstab combined on the play as the latter made a run to the left post before slotting a pass to Coulson on the left side of the box for the score and a 3-1 lead.

Sophomore Tunji Osifeso and Farias each had shots stopped by Broich over the final seven minutes as the Camels applied late pressure, but Campbell was unable to find the back of the net. Farias' attempt came on a point-blank shot in the 88th minute but was corralled by the onrushing keeper.

Campbell will play its final regular season road contest as the Camels travel to Liberty on Wednesday evening at 5 p.m. The Camels own an 11-9-1 lead in the all-time series against the Flames but trail 5-3-1 on Liberty's home field.
