LYNCHBURG, Va. - Junior Reafe Anderson found an equalizer just 19 seconds after Liberty's opening goal, but a 76th minute score by Tim Harbison of the Flames dealt Campbell a 2-1 defeat in its final regular season road matchup Wednesday evening.
Campbell drops to 5-11-0 (2-6-0 BSC) following the loss, while Liberty improves to 10-5-1 (5-3-0 BSC). The Flames also picked up their third straight win in the series between the two schools.
Freshmen Bradley Farias and Travis Gonzalez each notched a pair of shots on goal, with juniors Anderson and Isaiah Page adding one apiece. Liberty held a narrow 8-6 advantage in shots on target, led by a pair from Harbison.
Redshirt freshman goalkeeper Matthew Mozynski made six more saves in the match, bringing his season total to 92. Mozynski is now tied with Chris O'Byrne (1990) and Aaron Johnson (2007) for the 10th-most saves in a single season in Campbell history; he has also made five or more stops in nine of the Camels' 16 contests this season.
On Liberty's side, Scott Sutarik played the full 90 minutes between the posts, giving up only the goal to Anderson while making five saves.
The Flames opened the match with three quick tests for Mozynski in the first six minutes. Blessing Tahuona fired a strike goalward just over two minutes after the first whistle but was stopped by the redshirt freshman; just over a minute later Tahuona would try again, this time with his head, but the attempt sailed wide without pressuring the keeper. Alan Arellano added the final chance for Liberty, striking the crossbar on a long try in the sixth minute.
Following the initial pressure, Campbell's defense stepped up and held the Flames without a shot on target for nearly 30 minutes. Khalil Karl and Bay Kurtz found chances over the final 15 minutes of the opening frame but were unable to convert. Page had the Camels' lone shot of the half, firing over the crossbar just under 10 minutes into the contest.
Despite a late corner opportunity for the Flames, the two sides carried the scoreless deadlock into the halftime break.
Farias came out of the locker room firing for the Camels, notching the Camels' first shot on goal of the night in the 49th minute on a strike handled by Sutarik. The freshman tried his luck again in the 56th minute, but sent his chance high and over the bar.
Liberty's Tyler Bullock gave the Flames a 1-0 lead at 57:40 on a headed goal. Sachem Wilson and Troy Reeves combined on a play that sent a cross to the far post from the right side, leaving Bullock with enough space to head the ball past Mozynski for the advantage.
Just 19 seconds later, Campbell found the back of the net to pull even at 57:59. Farias controlled the ball and played a pass to the top center of the 18-yard box, setting up Anderson with a window to the lower left corner that the junior converted for his second goal of the season to make the scoreline 1-1 with just over 30 minutes to play.
Gonzalez nearly put the Camels ahead in the 67th minute with a headed attempt, but Sutarik was there for the save. Wilson and David Maharaj of Liberty likewise nearly found the go-ahead goal for their side, but Mozynski came up with stops on both shots to maintain the draw.
Set up with a corner kick in the 76th minute, Liberty grabbed a 2-1 lead on Harbison's fourth goal of 2014. Conner Fleming sent in the set piece and Harbison connected on it with his head. Mozynski was there for the initial stop, but Harbison collected his own rebound for the short score at 75:31.
Seeking another equalizer, Farias launched a hard shot as time expired, but Sutarik's last-second save gave Liberty the 2-1 win.
Campbell will be back in action this Saturday, Nov. 8, for its final regular season match of 2014 as UNC Asheville makes the trip to the Eakes Athletics Complex for a 6 p.m. showdown. Senior Day festivities will take place prior to the match as the Camels honor Aleksi Tossavainen, Bryce Miller, Jhuvon Francis, Chirag Shah, Cesar Gonzalez and Michael Wisniewski for their time spent with the program.
