BUIES CREEK, N.C. – Curtis Phillips of Campbell University has been named The Crons Brand Big South Conference men's basketball freshman of the week. In two outings, Phillips averaged 10 points, 2.5 rebounds and 1.0 steals, while shooting 45.5 percent (5-11) from the floor and 100 percent (8-8) from the foul line.
A product of White Station High School in Memphis, Tenn., Phillips is contributing 8.6 points, 5.2 rebounds and 1.0 steals for the Camels through five games.
"Curtis is playing really well," said Campbell head coach Kevin McGeehan. "I'm happy for him. He works hard and is a great competitor."
He scored a season-high 13 points (4-5 FG, 3-3 FT) in 21 minutes Sunday at Sacred Heart (11/30). Last Wednesday at No.-16 Ohio State, the 6-foot-5 forward made all five of his foul shots and finished with 7 points.
At White Station, Phillips was a starting forward for the nation's 22nd-ranked team in 2014. He contributed 10.3 points and 4.7 rebounds per game as a senior for a squad that finished 30-3 overall, won the TSSAA District 16 title and was TSSAA Region 8 runner-up.
Campbell (1-4) returns to action Tuesday in a 7:00 p.m. tip-off at James Madison (4-2).
