Lady Camels defeat Liberty 61-55 in OT

BUIES CREEK, N.C. -- D Janelle Brown hit a three-pointer from the right corner with 34.2 seconds left and Kiera Gaines made 5 free throws in the final 19.5 seconds to lift Campbell to a 61-55 OT win over Liberty Saturday at Gore Arena.

After Gaines hit free throws with 19.5 seconds to go, Liberty coach Carey Green called for a timeout when his team did not have one remaining.  Gaines then made the second of the two technical foul shots for a 4-point Campbell edge.

Gaines also knocked down a pair with 9.5 seconds left for the final margin.

Roslyn Presley led the Lady Camels (14-8, 9-4) with 18 points, while Gaines finished with 13 and Brown 10.

Both Presley and Gaines, who are 65.6 and 67.8 pct. from the line, respectively, went 6-for-7 from the charity stripe. The team finished shooting 89.5 pct., the highest rate since Nov. 18, when it shot 92.3 pct. against UNC Wilmington.

Mickalya Sanders topped defending Big South champion Liberty (13-9, 8-4) with 19 points.

The win snapped Campbell's six-game skid against Liberty, winning for the first time since Nov. 29, 1999.

In overtime, the Lady Camels were held to two field goal attempts, making one, while the Flames got off eight shots, draining three.

Campbell led by as many as 13, but Liberty used an 11-0 run in the second half to knot the score at 40 with 9:15 to go in regulation. Sanders netted nine of the Flames' points in the three-minute sprint.

The Lady Camels pulled ahead by three twice in the remaining nine minutes, but the Flames crawled back both times and held CU scoreless for the final four minutes.

Ashley Reninger and Sadalia Ellis each knocked down a free throw to even the score at 49, forcing extra minutes.

The Lady Camels only shot 7-of-25 from the field in the second half, a season low for buckets scored in a half.

CU closed out the first half on an 18-8 run, with five Lady Camels getting baskets.

At the break, Campbell had the edge in points off turnovers (12-2) and second chance points (9-4), leading 29-18. All five starters scored, with no points coming off the bench.

The Lady Camels finished the game shooting 33.9 pct. from the field and 25.0 pct. from beyond the arc. The team's 14 turnovers was the lowest total since the two teams met on Dec. 28.

The Flames shot 35.1 pct. overall and were only 55.6 pct. from the line.

Campbell is back in action Thursday at High Point in a 7 p.m. tip. The Panthers took the first meeting on Jan. 4 76-62.
