DeLand, Fla. – Freshman Katie Baker pitched a seven inning shutout to lead the Camels to victory against Elon in the Hatter Invitational Saturday morning. The win for Campbell improves their overall record to 3-4 and the loss for Elon drops it to 4-2 on the season.
Baker allowed four hits, two walks, and struck out seven in her complete game shutout. Baker has struck out a total of 18 batters in two starts at the Hatter Invitational. The victory for Baker evens her overall record to 1-1 for the season.
Junior Chelsea White took the loss for the Phoenix. The right-hander threw six innings, giving up three earned runs walking two and striking out one. The loss drops White to a record of 1-2 on the season.
Stephanie Jones and Courtney Klingler led the way for the Camels offensively. Jones went two-for-three with a double and an RBI. Klingler was one-for-three at the plate, but the one hit was a homerun.
Ali Ford led the way offensively for Elon. She had a single and a walk in two official plate appearances.
The first one and a half frames went scoreless, until Klinger broke the 0-0 tie by hitting a homerun over the left field fence.
Baker pitched her way through a scoreless top of the third inning by striking out two Elon hitters. In the bottom half of the inning, Jones singled to start the rally and Ericka Nesbitt added another single. Freshman Milly Martinet drove a double into left field scoring Jones to give Campbell a 2-0 lead.
Baker threw a scoreless fourth and fifth inning, and then Brittany Bruce drew a walk to start the home half of the inning. Bruce then stole second and third, before Jones doubled to the fence plating Bruce.
Campbell freshman Baker struck out two in the top of the seventh inning, securing a shutout victory for the Camels.
The Camels will close out the tournament against Stetson at 4 p.m. Saturday.
