Incoming freshman named first team All-American

BUIES CREEK, N.C. – Incoming Campbell freshman Summer Schuitema has been named first team Prepvolleyball.com 2014 HS Volleyball Academic All-American.

Prepvolleyball.com sought nominees for this list from high school coaches in late January, looking for seniors who were both sensational students and volleyball players. To that end, coaches were asked to nominate only those players who were both among the very best volleyball players in the state and total brains.

Summer Schuitema, 5-9 S/OH, Grant (Michigan) – Schuitema was a Second Team All-Michigan pick in 2013 after amassing 490 kills, 476 assists and 524 digs for a Region Finalist team. Academically, she is ranked No. 2 in her class with a 3.99 GPA. Academic All-State for volleyball, Schuitema has been completing a yearlong internship with a Pharmacist at Hometown Pharmacy, where she works 3 days per week. In addition, she has accumulated 18 college credits by dual enrolling in high school and college classes through Muskegon Community College during her junior and senior year.  By the end of her senior year, she will have completed eight college classes.  She is on a Youth Advisory Council through the Fremont Area Community Foundation, which has helped award grant funding to Newaygo County public schools worth $25,000 toward College Access.  She is a member of the National Honor Society and will be in the pre-Pharmacy program while playing volleyball at Campbell University, a Division 1 school in the Big South conference, in the fall.

To be considered for this honor, players had to be nominated. Unlike performance-based awards, which can sometimes be determined by reference to newspaper articles or coaches association websites alone, the specific academic prowess necessary to be considered here required that a coach — high school or club — affirmatively support a player's candidacy with specific academic information. Moreover, no nominated player was omitted from consideration.
