Campbell splits opening games at Invitational

CLEARWATER, FLA. – Campbell bounced back to defeat Quinnipiac 10-6, after falling to Central Connecticut state, 4-0, in the first game of the USF Invitational.

 Lauren Messina threw seven innings scattering five hits, walking one and striking out ten. The win for Messina gives her a 1-0 record, and improves Central Connecticut State to a 1-0 overall mark.

Katie Baker pitched five innings, allowing six hits, four runs (two earned), walking one and striking out eight. The loss puts Baker at 4-3 on the season, and gives Campbell a 9-8 overall record.

Central Connecticut State was led at the plate by Kat Malcolm, who went three-for-three, scoring a run and driving a run in.

Milly Martinet went two-for-three with two singles to lead Campbell offensively.

Central Connecticut State came to the plate in the first inning and scored two runs on three singles and a double. Central Connecticut State's runs gave them a 2-0 lead. Ericka Nesbitt singled in the bottom of the first, but was stranded.

In the bottom of the fourth Martinet singled, but Campbell could not capitalize and left pinch runner Amanda Daw on base.

Central Connecticut pushed across two more runs to give them a 4-0 lead they never relinquished.

Game 2

Campbell exploded for a six run third inning and closed out the first day of tournament action with 10-6 win over Quinnipiac in the UnderArmour Invitational.

CU collected its first win of the tournament pushing its overall record to 10-8, while Quinnipiac falls to 0-2.

The winning pitcher for Campbell is Morgan Eisenga, who pitched 4.1 innings allowing five hits, six runs (three earned), walking three, and striking out seven. The win moves her record to 2-1 on the season.

Katie Alferie took the loss for Quinnipiac. She pitched 3.1 innings allowing 10 runs (none of which were earned), one walk, and struck out seven.

Sidney Robey led Quinnipiac at the plate going three-for-four with a run scored.

The Camels were led by Shaela Churchill, who went three-for-three, driving in two runs. Other leading hitters for CU were Ericka Nesbitt (3-5), Kerstin Womack (2-3), Bailey Bjorson (2-4) with four runs batted in.

Quinnipiac was leading 1-0 going into the top of the third inning. Ericka Nesbitt singled; Courtney Klinger reached via an error and Martinet was hit by a pitch. Womack singled to score a run, Bailey Bjorson hit a double to right center, Shaela Churchill tripled to right center, and Jones also tripled to end the six run inning.

Klingler reached via a single to start the fourth inning off for Campbell. Bjorson doubled with the bases loaded to drive in all three runs.  Churchill then doubled to bring in Bjorson to cap off the four run fourth.

Quinnipiac added five runs in the bottom of the fifth, on three base hits to cut Campbell's lead to 10-6.

Courtney Roberts pitched 2.2 innings in relief to close out the game and secure the 10-6 victory for Campbell.

The Camels return to action against St. Bonaventure at 9:30 a.m. Saturday, and continue tournament play against Oakland at 2:30 p.m.
