CLEARWATER, FLA. – Sophomore pitcher Courtney Roberts pitched a no-hitter, while Milly Martinet and Brittany Bruce added home runs to lead Campbell to a 3-0 victory over Villanova Sunday afternoon.
The no-hitter was Robert's first of her career and the eighth in Campbell history. Roberts struck out four and walked three in the no hitter. She earned her third win of the season, pushing her record to 3-2 on the season and Campbell's to 13-8.
Roberts said on the no-hitter, "My defense was great today, and without them this no-hitter would not have been possible."
The loss for Villanova is charged to Kate Poppe, who pitched seven innings, scattering five hits, walking two and striking out three. Poppe's record falls to 4-3 and the Wildcats overall record drops to 5-5.
Ericka Nesbitt went two-for-three leading Campbell offensively.
The game was scoreless going into the top of the seventh. Martinet hit a home run to left field off of the second pitch of the inning, giving CU a 1-0 lead. Bailey Bjorson reached via a walk. Bruce hit a two run home run to left field, driving in pinch runner Amanda Daw. Olivia Scarborough had a pinch hit double, but was stranded at second to end the inning. The Camels led 3-0, going into the bottom of the seventh.
Roberts induced two fly balls and a ground out in the seventh to seal the no-hit bid.
The Camels travel to Knoxville, Tenn. to play in the Tennessee Invitational. The other teams in the tournament are Western Kentucky, #3 Tennessee, Georgia Southern, and College of Charleston.
