BUIES CREEK, N.C. – Campbell defeated Radford in the first game of a doubleheader 4-2, while Radford took game two 4-3 Friday at Amanda Littlejohn Stadium.
Katie Baker pitched a complete game three hitter and home runs by Courtney Klingler and Milly Martinet helped lead CU to a victory in the first game of the doubleheader.
Katie Baker earned the win by pitching seven innings; scattering three hits allowing two runs none of which were earned. She struck out 11batters for the third time this season tying her career high. The win moves her to 7-5 on the year and CU to 18-13, (4-0).
Radford's Katie Walters was charged with the loss. She did not record an out in the first and gave up four earned runs on three hits while walking one. Walters' record drops to 4-6 on the year and Radford falls to 6-15, (0-1).
Courtney Klingler and Milly Martinet led the Camels each going one-for-three at the plate. The one hit for both Klingler and Martinet were home runs. Kerstine Womack, Brittany Bruce and Stephanie Jones each added singles for CU.
The Highlanders were led offensively by Jessie Hutchens, Casey Burns, Kayla Bishton. Hutchens and Burns were each one-for-three and Bishton was a one-for-one with a pinch hit single.
Ericka Nesbitt led off the home half for Campbell with a walk. Womack singled advancing Nesbitt to second. Klingler drove a ball over the left field fence on a 1-2 count plating Womack and Nesbitt. Martinet followed Klingler with a solo home run on a 1-0 count giving CU a 4-0 lead.
Radford took advantage of two errors by Campbell to plate its only two runs in the top of the sixth inning. CU led 4-2.
Radford's Casey Burns and Kayla Bishton singled with one out in the bottom of the seventh inning. Baker induced a fly out and a foul out to secure the 4-2 victory for the Camels.
Game 2
Abby Morrow's complete game five hitter lead Radford to a 4-3 victory over Campbell in the second game of the doubleheader.
Radford's Abby Morrow pitched seven innings, allowing three earned runs on five hits, while walking two and striking out three. Morrow's victory pushes her to 2-4 on the season and RU to 7-15, (1-1).
The loss is charged to CU's Morgan Eisenga. She did not register an out, allowing two earned runs on three hits. The loss evens her record at 2-2 on the year, and drops Campbell to 18-14, (4-1) on the year.
Brittany Bruce went three-for-three leading CU offensively. Martinet and Klingler drove in runs via sacrifice flies.
The Highlanders were led at the plate by Nia Chiles, who went two-for-three and scored a run. Whitney Davis was one-for-four her one hit being a solo home run.
Nia Chiles singled with one out in the first inning for Radford. Chiles swiped second and advanced on a wild pitch. The Highlanders' Jessie Hutchens squeezed home Chiles to give Radford a 1-0 lead.
Campbell went scoreless until its half of the third. Courtney Roberts and Bruce hit back-to-back singles putting runners at first and second. Kerstine Womack reached via a fielder's choice advancing pinch runner Amanda Daw to third and loading the bases with no outs. Klingler hit a sacrifice fly to right field plating Daw and advancing Womack and Bruce to second and third. Bruce scored on a wild pitch and Womack advanced to third. Martinet drove a sacrifice fly to the outfield plating Womack to give CU a 3-1 lead.
RU's Whitney Davis homered in the top of the fourth inning, cutting CU's lead down to 3-2.
The Highlanders manufactured two runs on two walks, a wild pitch, and three infield singles to take a 4-3 lead in the top of the fifth.
Campbell went scoreless in the fifth, sixth, and seventh innings to fall 4-3 to Radford in game two.
The rubber game of the three game series is slated for 1 p.m. Saturday at Amanda Littlejohn Stadium.
