BUIES CREEK, N.C. – For the second time this season, Fernando Guillen of Campbell University has been named the Choice Hotels Big South Conference men's tennis player of the week.
A senior from San Louis, Potosi, Mexico, Guillen went 3-1 for the Camels last week in a pair of league matches with Radford and Presbyterian. He scored a 2-0 record in top flight singles play with a come-from-behind victory over the Highlanders' Nicholas Sayer 4-6, 6-3, 6-2 and a tightly contested win over PC's Grayson Mills (7-6, 6-4), ending the Blue Hose's number-one's 12-match win streak.
Guillen went 1-1 in doubles play with teammate Rik van Gerwen. The duo dropped its No. 2 doubles match against Radford's Sayer and Joe Mills (8-4) before defeating the Blue Hose's combo of Ben Kelley and Ryan Miller (8-6).
He extended his singles win streak to 10 matches and led the Camels (9-4, 4-0) to their fifth- and sixth-straight team victories. Guillen improved to 10-3 on the spring season, 4-0 against Big South competition. He has also moved into fourth place on Campbell's all-time singles wins list (79-31), just two behind third-place Levente Nandori (81-41 from 1989-93).
"Fernando is certainly playing some good tennis, he was very impressive this past week at Radford against Sayer, who was Big South player of year two years ago and has been nationally ranked like Fernando and then Saturday here against Mills, who has achieved a very good record this year so far," said Campbell head coach David Johnson. "Fernando has certainly set the tone for the team and leads by example. His game definitely reflects his attitude, both of which are excellent."
CU has not lost since a 4-3 setback against UNCG on Feb. 26 and is 6-0 in the month of March. The Camels return to action with Saturday's 2 p.m. start at Winthrop (10-7, 3-0) in a matchup of the last two Big South teams unbeaten in conference play.
