Softball splits doubleheader at Gardner-Webb

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. –  Campbell fell to Gardner-Webb 2-1 in ten innings in the first game of a doubleheader, while Campbell defeated Gardner-Webb 6-2 in the second game at Varsity Field in Boling Springs, N.C.

Jessica Childers went 10 innings allowing one run on six hits, while walking two and striking out five.  Childers goes to 7-11 on the season, and the Bulldogs go to 11-21 overall and 1-3 in the Big South. 

Courtney Roberts pitched 7.2 innings, scattering four hits, allowing one earned run while walking two.  She struck out a season high 10 batters. Julia Callicutt is charged with the loss for Campbell. She pitched 1.2 innings allowing one run on two hits while walking two. Callicutt falls to 2-3 on the season and CU is now 20-17 and 6-4 in the Big South.

Campbell was led at the plate by Jordan Clarke who was 2-for-4 with two singles.  Kerstine Womack, Courtney Klingler, Shaela Churchill, and Courtney Roberts each added hits in the contest.  

The Runnin' Bulldogs were led offensively by Samantha Meenaghan, who was 3-for-5 with a run batted in. Megan Gibbons went 1-for-4 her lone hit being a home run.

The game was scoreless through first four innings. Churchill singled to lead off the top of the fifth inning.  Clarke singled down the left field line advancing pinch runner Amanda Daw to second.  Roberts singled on push bunt to load the bases for Campbell. Brittany Bruce hit a sacrifice fly to right field to score Daw to give CU a 1-0 lead.

CU took the lead all the way to the bottom of the seventh inning. Gibbons homered to left field to tie the game 1-1 and to send the game to extra innings.

The game was tied 1-1 until the tenth inning. Campbell's Katie Baker was placed on second due to the international tie-breaking rule.  She was advanced by a sacrifice bunt by Churchill, but was stranded to end the inning.  Samantha Meenaghan singled with the bases loaded to score Breanna Blakely to win the game for Gardner-Webb 2-1.

Game 2

Campbell's offense exploded for three runs in the top of the  fourth inning to defeat Gardner-Webb 6-2 in the second game of the doubleheader.

Katie Baker pitched seven innings allowing two earned runs on eight hits, while walking one and striking out six. Baker moves to 9-7 on the year, and CU goes to 21-17 on the year and CU moves to  7-4 in the Big South.

GWU's Ashley Rhyne is charged with the loss, going 3.2 innings allowing five runs (three earned) on six hits, while walking four and striking out three.  Rhyne's record goes to 3-11 on the year and the Runnin' Bulldogs fall to 11-22 on the season and 1-4 in the Big South.

Campbell was led offensively by Klingler, who was 3-for-4 with a home run and two runs driven in.  Womack went 2-for-4 scoring a run and driving in a run. 

Gardner-Webb was led at the plate by Samantha Meeneghan, who was 3-for-4 with a run driven in. Megan Gibbons went 2-for-4 with a pair of singles.

Campbell and Gardner-Webb went scoreless in the first frame.   Raven Lee drew a walk to lead off the second inning. Daw was inserted as a pinch runner for Raven Lee.  Daw swiped second and advanced to third on a groundout.  Daw scored via a wild pitch to give CU a 1-0 lead in the top of the second.

In the top of the third Campbell answered with another run.  Klingler singled through the left side and then stole second two pitches later.  Raven Lee singled to left field and Klingler scored on a misplay Gardner-Webb's left fielder extending the lead to 2-0 going to the bottom of the third.  Baker struck out two of three batters to close out the third inning.

Brittany Bruce reached with one out via a fielder's choice in the top of the fourth. Bruce stole second and then was driven in on a single by Womack, who reached third base via a miss play by the catcher.  Klingler doubled to left field scoring Womack building CU's lead to 4-0.  Martinet reached base via an error by the right fielder, scoring Klingler to push CU's lead to 5-0. 

The game was scoreless for the next one and a half innings before Klingler homered for Campbell extending its lead to 6-0 going to the bottom of the sixth.

Gardner-Webb added a run in the bottom of the sixth and a run in the bottom of the seventh to total the final score of 6-2 Campbell.

The Camels take on Gardner-Webb in the series deciding game tomorrow at 3 p.m.
