BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. – Courtney Roberts and Katie Baker combined for nine strikeouts to lead Campbell to a 3-1 victory over Gardner-Webb at Varsity Field Monday afternoon.
Roberts pitched five innings, allowing one earned run on four hits, while striking out four and walking two. Katie Baker pitched two perfect innings of relief, striking out five of the six batters she faced. Baker earned her second save of the year. Roberts collects the win moving her record to 7-4 on the year and the Camels move to 22-17 overall and 8-4 in the Big South.
GWU's Jessica Childers pitched seven innings. She allowed three runs (two earned) on five hits, striking out five and walking five in the loss. Childers drops to 7-12 on the year, and the Runnin' Bulldogs fall to 11-23 overall mark and 1-5 in the Big South.
Milly Martinet led Campbell at the plate going 1-for-4 with a two-run home run. Martinet's home run sets the Campbell record for most home runs hit by a freshman with 14. The previous record was set by Courtney Klingler last season at 13. Brittany Bruce, Jordan Clarke and Klingler each added hits in the contest.
Gardner-Webb was led by Samantha Meenaghan at the plate. She went 2-for-3 with two singles. Kellie Beres and Megan Champion also collected hits for the Runnin' Bulldogs.
Klingler singled with two outs in the top of the first. Milly Martinet drove a ball over the left field fence to give CU a 2-0 going to the bottom of the first. Roberts struck out a one and induced a two fly outs to left field to get out of the first inning.
The score remained 2-0 going into the fourth. CU loaded the bases, but left the basses loaded. GWU's Champion singled driving in Kellie Beres, who had reached via a bunt single. Campbell led 2-1 at the end of the fifth.
The score remained 2-1 until the top of the seventh. Bruce lead of the top of the seventh with a single through the left side, then stole second two pitches later. Womack grounded out to third base, Bruce scored on an errant return throw trying to get her out at third.The Camels led 3-1 going into the bottom of the seventh. Baker struck out two and induced a pop out to secure the 3-1 victory for Campbell.
Campbell travels to Raleigh to take on North Carolina State, Wednesday April 2 at 6 p.m.
