No. 2 Tennessee clips Campbell 1-0

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – Ellen Renfroe pitched a seven inning shutout to lead Tennessee to a 1-0 victory over Campbell, Friday in the Tennessee Invitational.

Ellen Renfroe scattered two hits and one walk while striking out 12 in a complete game effort.  The win for Renfroe gives her an 11-0 mark on the season, and the Volunteers a 19-1 overall record.

Courtney Roberts pitched 6.2 innings allowing four hits, six walks, and striking out two.  Roberts did allow a run though it was not earned. The loss for Roberts evens her record at 3-3 and drops Campbell to 13-10 on the season.

Stephanie Jones and Brittany Bruce each had singles going one-for-three at the plate.

Tennessee was led at the plate by Madison Shipman, who went two-for-three with two doubles.

In the bottom of the second inning, Tennessee earned three straight walks to load the bases with one out.  Roberts induced a 6-2-5 double play ball to end the inning for Campbell.

Roberts took a no hitter through 3.2 innings, when Shipman doubled down the left field line.  Roberts bounced back after the hit and struck out the next batter to end the threat.

Tennessee manufactured a rally in the bottom of the fourth.  Mellissa Davin singled to start the inning and advanced to second on an error.  Lexi Overstreet drew a walk to put runners at first and second for the Volunteers.  Roberts induced two fly balls and a strike out to get out of the jam.

Campbell began a two out rally in the top of the fifth.  Bruce singled up the middle for the first hit off of Renfroe.  Kerstine Womack was hit by a pitch, advancing Bruce to second.  Renfroe got out of the inning with a strike out.

Shipman doubled to right centerfield with one out in the bottom of the fifth inning. She was left on base after a sacrifice bunt advanced her to third. Roberts got Mellissa Davin to pop out to shortstop to end the inning.

Stephanie Jones singled with one out in the top of the sixth inning. Ericka Nesbitt laid down a sacrifice bunt to move Jones over to second with two outs. Courtney Klingler was intentionally walked to put runners at first and second.  Renfroe earned her ninth strikeout of the game to get out of the inning.

Going to the bottom of the seventh the game was still knotted at zero.  Roberts induced a fly out and a ground ball to third to get two quick outs.  Megan Greer singled for Tennessee and then stole second base on the next pitch.  Campbell intentionally walked Shipman to set up the force play. Aldrete hit a groundball and Greer scored on a throwing error, giving Tennessee a 1-0 victory over CU.

The Camels continue the Tennessee Invitational Saturday starting at 11:30 a.m. against Georgia Southern and continue tournament play at 3:30 p.m. against College of Charleston.
