CU wins Georgia State tourney; Yost ties for individual lead

STOCKBRIDGE, GA. – Campbell won its fourth women's golf tournament of the year Tuesday after the Camels claimed the John Kirk Panther Intercollegiate by 15 strokes at Eagle's Landing Country Club.

The Camels were 4-under-par over the final 36 holes as a team and overcame a two-stroke deficit heading into the final round to set a 54-hole tournament record (304-286-286—876) on the par-72, 6164-yard layout that formerly hosted the LPGA Tour's Chick-Fil-A event.

Host Georgia State (300-288-303—891) finished as runner-up in the 21st-annual event.  Campbell claimed the tournament title for the fifth time (1993, '97, '98, '04, '14) by producing its second-lowed 54-hole score of the year.

Georgia State's Maria Palacios (72-70-72—214) birdied the first playoff hole to claim medalist honors after finishing in a 3-way tie at 2-under-par with Campbell senior Kaylin Yost (74-67-73—214) and Amira Alexander of Georgia (71-73-70—214).

The showing marked the fourth time in her career that Yost finished in the lead or tied at the conclusion of stroke play in a tournament.  She shared medalist honors at the Fighting Camel Fall Classic and has five top-10 finishes in 10 tournaments this season.

Campbell junior Lisbeth Brooks finished sixth (76-72-72—220), sophomore Tahnia Ravnjak tied for eighth (78-76-68—222) and freshman Nadine White tied for 15th (76-76-73—225).  CU freshman Louise Latorre tied for 51st (83-71-84—238) in the 90-golfer field.

The victory was Campbell's fourth of the 2013-14 season and the 74th in the 23-year coaching career of John Crooks, who stands second among all active NCAA Division I women's golf coaches in tournament wins.  Earlier this year, Campbell won the Golfweek Program Challenge for the third-straight year before claiming The Patriot Intercollegiate/Big South Preview and the Fighting Camel Fall Classic.

One day after matching her career-low round (67), Yost played Tuesday's final 15 holes at 2-under-par.  The Fort Lauderdale, Fla., resident tied for the tournament lead with 13 birdies, finished second in par-4 scoring (+1), tied for third in par-5 scoring (-5) and tied for 11th (+2) in scoring on the par-3 holes.

Brooks moved up six places on the leader board after turning in her second-straight even-par round.  Her scorecard Tuesday included three birdies and 13 pars.  The Waunakee, Wis., native finished the event tied for first in par-5 scoring (-6), tied for third in par-4 scoring (+2), tied for sixth with nine birdies and tied for ninth in pars (35).  Brooks logged her fifth top-10 showing of the season.

Ravnjak shot a 4-under-par 68 on Tuesday and moved 23 places up the leader board thanks to a final round that included 5 birdies and 12 pars.  The product of Cordeaux Heights, Australia tied for seventh in par-5 scoring (-3), 10th on the par-4 holes (+5), made eight birdies (T11th) and 34 pars (T13th) while claiming her fourth top-10 finish this year.

Latorre played the par-5 holes at 3-under, 7th-best in the field.  She recorded an eagle Monday on the par-5 third hole.
