ROCK HILL, S.C. – No.-56 Winthrop claimed the doubles point, then added a trio of straight sets singles victories to defeat Campbell 6-1 Friday.
The Eagles (14-4, 7-1) ended Campbell's 6-match win streak in conference play as Andressa Garcia dealt Campbell's No.-1 singles player Karolina Chernaya her first loss in league action this year in a 3-set decision. Chernaya, who was unbeaten in 7 previous Big South matches, won the opening set 6-1, but fell 6-4, 6-4 and dropped to 15-4 in dual matches while seeing her 4-match win streak halted.
Natasha Afridi and Winthrop's Caitlin Cridland divided the first two sets before the Winthrop left-hander won the third 6-0.
Winthrop extended its dual win streak to four matches.
Campbell's lone point came through junior Tamara Stanic, who claimed her team-leading 23rd singles win of the season (23-5) and improved to 17-2 in duals, 7-1 against the Big South with a super tiebreak victory at the third singles position.
Stanic and Afridi won 8-4 at the second doubles position, but Winthrop prevailed at the first and third spots. Campbell played for the second time in three outings without No.-4 singles and No.-3 doubles starter Ana Maria Ortiz, who sat out due to injury.
Campbell (13-7, 6-2) concludes its regular season at home Sunday in a 2 p.m. start against No.-73 Charleston Southern (14-3, 8-0).
Sunday's match marks the final home contest for a pair of Campbell seniors – Karolina Chernaya and Natasha Afridi. Chernaya has fashioned a 22-7 overall record this year, 15-4 at No.-1 singles, and has moved into the top-10 in Campbell's all-time singles wins list (74-30).
The native of Tashkent, Uzbekistan is only four victories behind Eleonora Vegliante (78-16 from 1995-98), who sits in 7th place.
Afridi has collected a 10-8 singles record this season, including a 5-3 mark in Big South play. The senior from Tokyo, Japan has also posted an 18-8 doubles mark with Stanic.
