FARMVILLE, Va. – Longwood homered twice in the first game of a doubleheader to defeat Campbell 6-1, while in the second game LU's Elizabeth McCarthy pitched a five inning no-hitter to lead Longwood to a 8-0 victory over CU.
Game 1
Chelsea Sciacca and Carly Adams hit back-to-back home runs to lead Longwood to a 6-1 victory over Campbell at Lancer Field in game one of the doubleheader. Shaela Churchill went 1-for-3 with a double driving in a run for the Camels.
Longwood's Libby Morris went the distance for the Lancers, allowing three hits, one earned run, one walk and struck out five in the winning effort. She improves her record to 14-5, and the Lancers move to 29-8 overall and 13-2 in the Big South.
Courtney Roberts is charged with the loss for Campbell. She pitched 2.1 innings allowing five earned runs on five hits, while walking three and striking out two. Roberts falls to 8-7 on the season and Campbell drops to 23-22 overall and 9-7 in the Big South.
Milly Martinet and Raven Lee each had a hit in the contest for CU. Churchill had the only extra base hit for the Camels plating Brittany Bruce, who reached via a walk.
Sciacca and Adams led the Lancers at the plate. Sciacca was 1-for-2 with a grand slam, driving in four runs for LWU. Adams went 2-for-3 with two RBI, one RBI coming via a solo home run.
The game was scoreless through the first inning of play. Bruce led off the top of the second with a walk for the Camels. Jordan Clarke advanced Bruce to second via a sacrifice bunt. Churchill hit a line drive into the right center field gap to plate Bruce, giving CU a 1-0 lead. CU's Roberts struck out two Lancers and induced a ground ball to get out of the second.
Longwood loaded the bases in its half of the third inning. Sciacca hit a ball over the right field fence to give Longwood a 4-1 lead. Adams was next in the order for the Lancers and homered to right field extending the Longwood lead to 5-1. Katie Baker entered the game for the Camels and struck out the final two batters to end the third inning.
In the bottom of the fourth Erica Johnson made an all-out diving catch on a ball hit in to foul territory in deep left field. Katie Baker induced a pop out and struck out a batter to hold the Longwood lead at 5-1 going to the top of the fifth.
The Lancers added a run in the bottom of the fifth inning to extend its lead to 6-1.
LWU's Morris struck out the final two batters of the game to secure a 6-1 victory over Campbell.
Game 2
Elizabeth McCarthy pitched a five inning no hitter and Longwood's offense scored eight times to lead Longwood 8-0 victory over Campbell Saturday afternoon at Lancer Field.
McCarthy pitched five innings, walking two and striking out one in her no-hit bid. McCarthy moves to 13-3 on the season and Longwood goes to 30-8 overall and 14-2 in the Big South.
The loss is charged to Julia Callicutt. She pitched four innings allowing eight runs (three earned) on four hits, while walking four and striking out one. She falls to 2-4 on the season and CU drops to 23-23 overall and 9-8 in the Big South.
Erica Johnson and Jordan Clarke each drew walks for Campbell in their plate appearances.
Carly Adams and Taylor Hedrick led Longwood offensively. Adams was 1-for-2 with two RBI and two runs scored. Hedrick was 1-for-3 with double driving in two runs.
In the bottom of the first inning Longwood scored four runs on two hits. LU's Adams drove in a pair of runs via a single. Hedrick doubled to left center field plating two more runs to give Longwood a 4-0 lead after the first.
Longwood added four more runs in the bottom of the fourth, to secure an 8-0 lead. The Lancers never relinquished the mark set in the fourth and defeated CU 8-0 in five innings.
Campbell takes on Longwood in the series finale at 1 p.m. Sunday.
