FARMVILLE, Va. – Katie Baker pitched a complete game and Campbell rallied for two runs in the top of the seventh inning to defeat Longwood 3-2 Sunday afternoon at Lancer Field.
Katie Baker earned the win for Campbell. She pitched seven innings, allowing one earned run on five hits, while walking three and striking out five. The win moves her to 10-9 on the season and Campbell to 24-23 overall and 10-8 in the Big South.
Elizabeth McCarthy was charged with the loss for the Lancers. She went 6.1 innings allowing three runs (two earned) on five hits, walking one and striking out five. McCarthy drops to 13-4 on the season and Longwood falls to 30-9 overall and 14-3 in the Big South.
Jordan Clark and Milly Martinet led the Camels at the plate, each going 2-for-3 on the day. One of Martinet's two hits was a home run, driving in a run and scoring a run. Brittany Bruce went 1-for-2 with a walk and a run scored.
Longwood was led at the plate by Chelsea Sciacca, who was 2-for-3 with two singles. Casey Lifsey added a single and a run driven in for the Lancers.
Martinet stepped to the plate with two outs in the top of the first. Martinet drove a ball over the center field wall to give Campbell a 1-0 lead after the top of the first inning. Longwood's leadoff hitter Emily Murphy reached second via an error and was advanced to third on a fielder's choice. Murphy scored on a passed ball to even the score at 1-1 after the first inning.
Campbell went scoreless in its half of the second. Longwood's Jamie Barbour walked to lead off the bottom of the second. Lifsey singled through the left side plating Barbour to put Longwood up 2-1 after two complete innings.
CU went in order in the top half of the third inning. CU's Baker struck out a batter and induced a ground out to get out of an inning where runners had reached first and second with one out. Longwood led 2-1 after three innings.
Baker struck out three of the next six batters she faced in the fifth and sixth inning. The Camels held Longwood to a 2-1 lead through six complete innings.
Campbell came to the plate in the top of the seventh trailing 2-1. Jordan Clarke doubled to right center field with one out in the top of the seventh inning. Brittany Bruce singles and advancing pinch runner Maggie Christopher to third with one out. Bruce advanced to second on a wild pitch and Shaela Churchill drew a walk to load the bases with one out. Olivia Scarborough reached via an error, plating Christopher and Bruce on the play, putting CU up 3-2 going to the bottom of the seventh. Baker struck out two batters and induced a ground ball in the bottom half of the seventh to secure the 3-2 victory for the Camels.
Campbell travels to Appalachian State for a midweek doubleheader Tuesday beginning at 4 p.m.
