Chernaya and Ortiz earn Big South women's tennis honors

BUIES CREEK, N.C. – For the fourth-straight year, Karolina Chernaya of Campbell University has earned women's tennis all-conference honors.  The senior from Tashkent, Uzbekistan was named to the Big South all-conference singles team released Monday afternoon.

In addition, Campbell sophomore Ana Maria Ortiz has received recognition on the Big South women's tennis all-academic team.  The native of Betera, Spain owns a 3.737 grade-point average as an economics major.

Since joining the Campbell program in January 2011, Chernaya has compiled a 75-30 career singles record, just three shy of seventh place on Campbell's all-time victories list.  She owns a 23-7 overall record this season, including a 16-4 mark in dual matches and 8-1 record at No.-1 against Big South opponents.

She was one of three Big South players to suffer only one loss at No.-1 singles along with all-conference honoree Andressa Garcia of Winthrop and player of the year Marketa Placha of Charleston Southern.  Chernaya dealt Placha her lone loss in conference play, while Placha defeated Garcia, who was the only Big South foe to defeat the Campbell No.-1.

As a freshman in 2011, Chernaya was named Atlantic Sun freshman of the year and to the A-Sun all-conference team.  She was selected to both the Big South singles and doubles all-conference squads in 2012 and earned all-league notice in doubles as a junior in 2013.

Chernaya is just the fourth Campbell women's tennis player to earn all-conference honors four times at the Division I level.  Andrea Boda (1991-94), Aleksandra Cvetkovic (1992-95) and Teodora Doncheva (1999-2002) each were recognized on the all-league teams four times by either the Big South (1987-94, 2012-present) or Atlantic Sun (1995-2011).

"Karolina certainly has had a great career for us and ranks among our top players of all time in terms of wins and awards," said Campbell head coach David Johnson.  "She has earned all-conference recognition previously in addition to freshman of the year.  She epitomizes the consummate student-athlete and is well-liked by all her peers.  She will be hard to replace."

On the court, Ortiz produced a 4-3 record in Big South Conference singles play, 11-16 on the season.  In doubles, she paired with Ewa Telenga to post a 7-1 record at the third position.

The Camels (13-8, 6-3 Big South) will meet fifth seed Coastal Carolina (17-6, 5-4) Tuesday at 11:30 a.m. in the quarterfinal round of the Big South Championship at Boiling Springs, N.C.  The winner will advance to most likely meet regular season champ Charleston Southern in Wednesday's 2:30 p.m. semifinal.
