NINETY SIX. S.C. – With Campbell individuals holding down the top three places in the leader board, the Camels won the 2014 Big South Conference women's golf championship in record fashion Tuesday. Campbell set a 54-hole conference tournament record (278-289-297—864) to win the title by 30 strokes over runner-up Coastal Carolina.
Freshman Louise Latorre (68-73-72—213) won her first collegiate tournament to claim individual honors and break the Big South individual 54-hole score by one stroke. The native of Pau, France birdied the final two holes and was the lone golfer in the 45-player field to shoot par Tuesday in the rainy and windy conditions of South Carolina's midlands.
Latorre produced one top-10 individual finish in her first nine events of the year, but tied a Big South Championship record for lowest round (68) on Sunday to take the opening day lead. She was tied with teammate Tahnia Ravnjak for the lead after 36 holes; then made five birdies Tuesday.
Ravnjak (72-69-79—214) birdied the 17th hole and made par on 18 to secure runner-up honors. The sophomore from Cordeaux Heights, Australia tied Brittany Henderson's 214 total that was the conference 54-hole mark until Latorre's finish this year.
Two-time Big South player of the year Kaylin Yost finished third on the same The Patriot at Grand Harbor course where she was runner-up two years ago. The senior from Fort Lauderdale, Fla., finished the event at one-under-par 215 (69-73-73) and joined Latorre and Ravnjak on the All-Championship team.
Junior Lisbeth Brooks tied for seventh place (69-74-83—226) to earn her sixth top-10 finish of the year. Freshman Nadine White produced her best finish – a tie for 13th (74-78-79—231) – in just her fourth collegiate outing.
"They never cease to amaze me," said head coach John Crooks. "They're five very talented young ladies. This was a week where a lot of good things happened. I'm so proud to be associated with them. To win this golf tournament over a very good Coastal team by 30; this was quite a performance."
Coastal Carolina (297-297-300—894) was runner-up, but never drew close after trailing the Camels by 19 following the opening round. Frida Castillo of Coastal finished fourth at three-over-par 219 (73-71-75), while her teammates Bailey Cocca (75-75-74—224) and Lena Schaeffner (71-77-76—224) tied for fifth at plus-8.
In spite of a two hour delay to start the day and a 55-minute delay halfway through the round, Campbell claimed its fourth Big South title and 12th conference championship as a Division I member. In 23 seasons under the direction of Coach Crooks, the Camels have finished either first or second 21 times in the Big South (1992-94, 2012-present) and Atlantic Sun (1995-2011) conference tournaments.
After finishing as runner-up in the 2013 event, Campbell rode record-breaking performances over the first two rounds this week to build a 27-stroke edge heading into Tuesday's final day. The Camels also set Big South Championship and school records for 18- (278) and 36-hole (567) totals on the par-72, 6083-yard Patriot layout.
Campbell's 3-day total (864) bettered the previous league championship 54-hole mark (880 set by Coastal Carolina in 2013) by 16 strokes. The total was four strokes shy of the school-record 860 Campbell produced on a par-71 course while winning the Golfweek Program Challenge in Sept. 2012.
The 53rd-ranked Camels will advance to the NCAA women's golf regional round, May 8-10 at Tallahassee, Fla. (East), Stillwater, Okla. (Central) or Ce Elum, Wash (West). The NCAA Championship is set for May 20-23 at Tulsa, Okla.
Campbell presented Coach Crooks with his 75th career coaching victory, 2nd-most among Division I active women's golf coaches behind Dan Brooks of Duke (117). The crown was Crooks' 120th combined tournament championship, including 45 on the men's side.
Crooks also became the first Big South coach to win four conference women's golf titles, breaking a tie with Coastal Carolina's Katie Quinney along with Eddie Weldon of Winthrop and Howard Vroon of Charleston Southern.
