BUIES CREEK, N.C. – Shaela Churchill and Olivia Scarborough delivered homeruns to salvage a split against Presbyterian in conference action on Friday evening. The win gave Head Coach Drew Peterson his 700th career win.
The Camels, wearing pink uniforms in honor of "Camels for a Cure", earned the doubleheader split with a 4-0 shutout victory, avenging an 11-2 loss in Game 1. The win gave Peterson his 700th career victory in 24 years as a head coach with Bethel College and Campbell. Campbell moved to 25-24 overall and 11-9 in Big South games with the split, while Presbyterian went to 23-21 on the year and 8-10 in the league.
In the first four innings, a pitcher's duel was in effect before Churchill hit a three-run homerun around the left field foul pole. Churchill's shot brought in Kerstine Womack, who led off the inning with an infield single, and Courtney Klingler, who was hit by a pitch.
The score wouldn't change until Olivia Scarborough clobbered a fastball over the left field fence to give CU a 4-0 advantage. That would be all the support that Katie Baker would need to move to 11-9 on the season. Baker threw a complete game only giving up two hits and striking out eight. Sydney Seigler was charged with the loss, evening her record to 11-11. She gave up four runs and four hits while striking out four.
The Blue Hose were led by Shelby Petik who went 2-for-3 in the nightcap, giving Presbyterian the only two hits in the second game.
Presbyterian took Game 1 of the doubleheader with an 11-2 victory behind a pair of homeruns by Hope Rogers and a 4 RBI game by Kirby Legacki.
Brittany Bruce gave the Camels a 2-0 lead delivering a two-run homerun to left field, her second of the season. Presbyterian would answer by scoring in the final four innings of the game. Rogers delivered a solo homerun in the 4th inning to put Presbyterian on the board.
After the Blue Hose knotted the game at two a piece, Presbyterian grabbed the lead on Legacki's bases clearing triple to center field. Rogers extended the lead in the 7th inning with a two-run homerun.
Womack led the Camels with a 2-for-3 effort while Klinger contributed a 1-for-2 effort along with two walks.
Courtney Roberts was charged with the loss giving up five runs in 5 2/3 innings while striking out five, evening her record to 8-8. Kensley Loudermelk was awarded the win, giving up two runs and striking out five in a complete game effort, improving her record to 2-5.
