NINETY SIX, S.C. – Freshman Gaston Bertinotti is tied for second place while Campbell sits seventh in the team standings after Monday's first round of the Big South Conference men's golf championship at The Patriot at Grand Harbor.

Bertinotti shot a 2-under-par 70 and is locked in a four-way tie four shots behind leader David Denlinger of Charleston Southern (66).

Coastal Carolina (285) leads the 10-school field at 3-under-par, while Campbell sits 11 strokes back at 8-over 296 heading into Tuesday's second round of the 54-hole event.

Playing in only his sixth collegiate event, Bertinotti carded his best collegiate round while making three birdies and 14 pars on the par-72, 7120-yard Patriot layout.  The native of Cordoba, Argentina birdied the par-4 first and 10th holes as well as the par-five 18th to turn in a scorecard that showed him playing the front and back nine both at one-under.

Bertinotti played the par-4 holes at 1-under (3rd-best in the 50-golfer field), was 1-under on the par-5s and even on the par-3 layouts.  His 14 pars were tied for fourth-best on Monday.

Fellow freshman Craig Hornberger shot a one-over 73 and is tied for 14th place.  The product of Lancaster, Pa., birdied the par-3 fourth and par-4 sixth holes and made 13 pars on the day (T6th).  He was even on the par-3 holes, 1-over on the par-4s.

Sophomore Mikko Lehtovuori is tied for 26th (75), while junior Grant Houser is tied for 36th (78) and senior Amanjyot Singh 42nd (79).

"Today was one of those days we did a lot of things well, but we had a couple guys that made a couple mistakes that blew up on them.  That's why we're not in the top two or three," said Campbell head coach John Crooks.  "I think our team saw today is all they've got to do is play as well as they're capable of.  No one here's going to run away with this thing.  If they step up, the way our women did last week, they're right back in this thing."

Campbell will again be paired with Gardner-Webb for Tuesday's second round that is scheduled to begin at 8:30 a.m.  Wednesday's final round is also set for an 8:30 a.m. start.
