NINETY SIX, S.C. – Freshman Gaston Bertinotti is one stroke off the individual lead and Campbell is tied for sixth in the team standings after Tuesday's second round of the Big South Conference men's golf championship at The Patriot at Grand Harbor.
For the second-straight day, Bertinotti shot a two-under-par 70 (70-70—140) and trails leader David Denlinger of Charleston Southern (66-73—139) by a single stroke entering Wednesday's final round on the par-72, 7120-yard Patriot layout.
No.-35 Liberty (290-293—583) produced the low round of the day and overtook first day leader Coastal Carolina (285-303—588) for top spot on the team leader board. Campbell (296-306—602) is tied with Winthrop (288-314—602) for sixth in the 10-school field, 13 strokes behind third-place Charleston Southern (286-303—589).
A native of Cordoba, Argentina, Bertinotti matched the collegiate low round he produced Monday by making four birdies and 12 pars on the second day of the 54-hole tourney. Starting on the 10th tee, he birdied the par-four 10th, par-five 13th and par-four 16th to make the turn at 3-under.
Through 36 holes, he is 2-under on the par-4 holes (tied for best in the 50-golfer field) and even on the par-3 layouts (tied for second), while playing the par-5s two-under. His 26 pars are tied for third-best, while he has made 7 birdies (T3rd).
Fellow freshman Craig Hornberger is tied for 16th place at six-over 150 (73-77). The product of Lancaster, Pa., has five birdies and 21 pars through 36 holes and has played the par-3 layouts even.
Sophomore Mikko Lehtovuori made two eagles Tuesday – on the par-5 fifth and 18th holes – and is tied for 31st place (75-80—155). Senior Amanjyot Singh is 42nd (79-79—158) and junior Grant Houser is tied for 45th (78-85—163).
"I got to watch Gaston play some solid golf today. He's in a good place heading into the final round," said Campbell head coach John Crooks. "I thought the golf course played fair, but other than Gaston we had too many big numbers. We had some double and triple bogeys and when you're playing well, you don't have any. But we're in a position that if we have a good round tomorrow, we can have a top-three finish."
Wednesday's final round is also set for an 8:30 a.m. start. Live scoring is available at Golfstat.com.
