BUIES CREEK, N.C. – South Carolina State defeated short-handed Campbell 5-2 in women's tennis Thursday, ending the Camels' 7-match win streak.
Playing without injured sophomore Ana Maria Ortiz, the Camels dropped the doubles point; then fell in four singles matches to the nine-time defending MEAC champs.
Karolina Chernaya and Tamara Stanic each won their 21st singles matches of the year in straight sets for Campbell (12-6), which had not lost since Mar. 4 at Bethune-Cookman.
Stanic and Natasha Afridi improved to 17-7 overall in doubles, 12-5 in dual matches and 7-3 at the number-two position. However, SC State claimed the first and third doubles contests to secure the point.
Ortiz and Ewa Telenga had won all 6 of their doubles matches at the third position. However, Ortiz was injured in practice and did not play Thursday.
Campbell, which has won its last five league outings, returns to Big South Conference action Saturday in a 2 p.m. start at UNC Asheville.
