BUIES CREEK, N.C. – For the second-straight year, Shaela Churchill of Campbell University has been named to the Capital One Academic All-District 3 softball team by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).
A senior infielder from Winterville, N.C., Churchill owns a 4.0 grade-point average as a mathematics major. In addition, she is batting .234 with 2 home runs and a career-high 14 RBI plus a .966 fielding percentage in 37 games this year for the Camels, who carry a 27-24 overall record, 12-9 in the Big South, into this weekend's series at Charleston Southern.
Last month, she drove in a career-best 3 RBI with a 3-run homer in a win over Presbyterian. Earlier this season, she matched her career high with 3 hits vs. Quinnipiac. She has played in 169 games with 137 starts in her four-year career.
Churchill's selection marks the 14th time since 1995 a Campbell softball player has earned CoSIDA Academic All-District 3 honors. At least one Campbell student-athlete has achieved academic all-district status in each of the last 20 years.
"I know all of us in the Campbell Softball family are very proud of Shaela Churchill, and the tremendous example she sets as a student athlete," said head coach Drew Peterson. "She has consistently represented all that this honor entails for four years. There has not been a more deserving student athlete come through our program."
This year's honor adds to a long list of accolades for Churchill, who was also chosen for the 2013 CoSIDA Academic All-District 3 team. She is a three-time National Fastpitch Coaches Association All-America Scholar Athlete (2011, 2012, 2013), who has twice been named to the Big South Conference Presidential Honor Roll (2012, 2013). As a freshman, the South Central High School graduate was a member of the 2011 Atlantic Sun Conference All-Academic Team.
CoSIDA's 1800 members in the United States and Canada nominate players for Capital One Academic All-America® recognition. To be eligible, a student-athlete must be at least a sophomore in academic standing, have at least a 3.30 cumulative grade-point average, and be a starter or key reserve on his or her team. CoSIDA members vote on the all-district teams; then a national panel selects the Academic All-America squads from all first-team all-district choices. District 3 includes all NCAA Division I schools in North Carolina, Tennessee and Virginia.
Five Campbell student-athletes have earned Academic All-District honors thus far in the 2013-14 academic year. In addition to Churchill, Matt Parrish was chosen in baseball, while Ben Bolling, Kurt Odom and Hunter Somerville were selected to the football unit.
