Campbell finishes 20th at NCAA women's golf championship

TULSA, OKLA. – Freshman Louise Latorre shot a one-under-par 69 and Campbell set a school record for lowest round in post-season play on Friday's final day of the NCAA women's golf championship at Tulsa Country Club.

For the second-straight day, the 45th-ranked Camels turned in their best score of the event and finished in a tie for 20th place (305-303-289-281—1178) in the 24-team event with No.-20 Michigan State (305-283-302-288—1178).  The Big South Conference champions placed better than three schools ranked among the nation's top 30 – No.-25 California (1180), No.-24 Iowa State (1186) and No.-29 Kansas (1201).

Third-ranked Duke (293-285-278-274—1130) won the team championship by two strokes over No.-1 Southern California (293-291-278-270—1132).

Doris Chen of USC claimed individual honors at 6-under-par 274 (67-72-68-67), two shots ahead of Duke's Celine Boutier (70-70-67-69—276).

Tahnia Ravnjak and Lisbeth Brooks both shot even-par 70s Friday for Campbell on the par-70, 6194-yard layout.  Freshman Nadine White added a 72 and senior Kaylin Yost a 78 in her final collegiate round.

Campbell's final round score of 281 was better than No.-6 Washington (286), No.-8 Vanderbilt (284), No.-10 Alabama (282), No.-11 Arizona (287), No.-12 Stanford (289), No.-15 Northwestern (288), No.-17 NC State (292), Michigan State (288), No.-21 Florida (282), Cal (290), Iowa State (290), No.-27 Mississippi State (287), Kansas (292) and No.-31 Tulane (291).

A native of Pau, France, Latorre matched the school record for lowest round in NCAA Championship play set Tuesday by Yost.  The Big South Conference Championship medalist, Latorre made four birdies on Friday and played her final 36 holes of the tournament at 2-over par.

"They played well all day, but what they did on the back nine was just remarkable.  Tahnia shooting 33 on the back nine – Lizzy birdying the last hole; they just played some great golf and that's how they were able to beat some great teams," said Campbell head coach John Crooks, who has directed his program to NCAA regional competition 17 times in the last 22 years.  "It was really, really an outstanding performance.  Whatever the rankings are, they are, but Campbell finishes 20th in the country in my mind."

Campbell improved each round in the event, the first 36 holes of which were played in gusty wind conditions.  Friday's performance marked the second-straight day the Camels posted the best-ever team round in NCAA Championship play.  Thursday's 289 easily surpassed the 301 the team shot in the 1997 national tournament on the par-72 Scarlet Course in Columbus, Ohio.

Brooks, a junior from Waunakee, Wis., was Campbell's low individual in the NCAA Championship (78-71-74-70—293). A three-time all-conference performer, she made four birdies Friday, including one on her final hole, the par-three ninth.

Ravnjak played her final two rounds at even-par and finished the 72-hole event at 298 (83-75-70-70).  Her Friday scorecard showed five birdies and the sophomore from Cordeaux Heights, Australia played her final seven holes three-under par.

Freshman Nadine White of Brisbane, Australia recorded back-to-back 72s over the last two rounds to shoot 302 (80-78-72-72) for the event.  She had four birdies Friday while playing the final two days at 4-over.

A senior from Fort Lauderdale, Fla., Yost completed her collegiate career by shooting 69-82-74-78—303 in the NCAA Championship.  She was a two-time Big South Conference player of the year (2012, 2014) and won four tournament titles in her tenure.  Yost helped lead the Camels to regional berths in each of her final three years.

"I would certainly like to take a few minutes and enjoy this, but I couldn't help but look to the future today when my first two girls finish and they were both freshmen and they shoot 72, 69.  Then my sophomore and junior both shoot 70, so that speaks well of the future of this team," said Crooks.  "All five of our young ladies are very good and that's why we had a great year.  So many good things had to happen for us to win the conference championship then qualify for the national tournament.  To finish up by shooting 281 on this golf course – beating so many great schools in the final round of the NCAA Championship, it's extremely gratifying, and I look forward to doing it again if we're so lucky."
