Track has strong showing on day one of NCAA East Preliminary

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Campbell's track & field teams competed at the 2014 NCAA Division I Men's and Women's Outdoor Track and Field East Preliminary at Hodges Stadium on the campus of the University of North Florida.

At the 2014 NCAA Division I Outdoor Track & Field East Preliminary, the top 48 individual teams and top 24 relay teams from the East region will be competing for the rights to head to the 2014 NCAA Division I Outdoor Track and Field Championships.

The top 12 finishers, in both individual events and relays, then advance on to the 2014 NCAA Division I Outdoor Track & Field Championships on June 11-14 in Eugene, Ore.

Anna Scott, a freshman from Kingston, Jamaica, advanced to the Friday's 6:45 p.m. running of the women's 100 meter quarterfinals by posting the 21st fastest time in the first round. Her time of 11.76 was good four fourth in heat one, as the top three finishers in the six heats, plus the next six fastest times move-on to the next round of competition.

Lynette Akai, a junior from Newburgh, Ind., advanced to Friday's 6:15 p.m. running of the women's 400 meter dash quarterfinals as she placed third in heat six with a time of 53.85. Her time is 27th overall in the event as the top three finishers in the six heats, plus the next six fastest times move-on to the next round of competition

Christopher Schulist, a senior from Holland, Mich., posted the 19th fastest time in the men's 1,500 meter run with a time of 3:48.94. In the men's 1,500 meters, there are four heats and the top five finishers from each heat, plus the next four fastest times, advance to Saturday's Quarterfinal race.

Although Schulist posted the 19th fastest time, he did not advance to Saturday's quarterfinal as he finished 8th in heat one and had the 8th fastest time after the automatic qualifiers, concluding his four-year career as a Fighting Camel.

Amon Terer, a freshman from Eldoret, Kenya, competed in the men's 10,000 meter run but was unable to finish the race.

Campbell will have as four athletes in action on Friday as Akai will compete in the 400 meter quarterfinals, Scott will run in the 100 quarterfinals and 200 meter first round, and Stanley Hicks and Jayshawn Campbell will compete in the men's 200 meter dash first round.

Action continues at the 2014 NCAA Division I Men's and Women's Outdoor Track and Field East Preliminary tomorrow at 10:00 a.m. with the field events and at 5:00 p.m. with the running events.
