CHARLESTON, S.C. – Campbell rallied for five runs in the seventh inning to earn a 5-3 victory over host Charleston Southern Saturday and a Big South Conference doubleheader split.
The Bucs scored four times in the bottom of the seventh in the opener to claim a 4-3 win. Campbell (28-25, 12-10) and CSU (23-30-1, 9-12) meet in the regular season finale Sunday at 2:00 p.m.
CSU starter Cheyenne Gandara carried a 3-0 lead and a one-hitter into the seventh inning of the nightcap before Campbell rallied. Brittany Bruce smacked a one-out home run – her third of the year – off reliever Jennifer Giles to cut the margin to 3-1.
Milly Martinet singled, Olivia Scarborough walked and Gandara returned to the pitching circle. Jordan Clarke then singled to load the bases. Maggie Christopher walked to score Martinet and cut the gap to 3-2. With two out, Kerstine Womack reached on an error to score pinch-runner Amanda Daw and tie the game.
Courtney Klingler, who finished 2-of-4 at the plate, broke the tie with a two-run hit that provided the winning margin.
Morgan Eisenga (3-2) went the distance for the Camels, scattering seven hits and allowing two earned runs while walking a pair and striking out three.
Gandara (8-11) suffered the tough-luck loss despite allowing no earned runs and 3 hits.
The Bucs jumped in front in the second on Lizzy Olmstead's RBI hit in the second, and added another when Hayes Holdsworth scored on a wild pitch. CSU tacked on an unearned run in the fourth.
In the opener, Campbell took the lead in the second inning when Klingler singled, Bruce doubled and Klingler scored on Shaela Churchill's fielder's choice. The Bucs tied the game in the bottom of the frame on Georgi Delio's RBI hit.
Campbell scored twice in the fifth without the benefit of a hit. Five walks and an error pushed the Camels in front 3-1.
Charleston Southern rallied for the opening win in the seventh on an RBI double by Stevi Johnson, Holdsworth's sac fly and a walk-off, run-scoring single by Brooke Holcomb.
Morgan Dowdy (4-5) tossed two and 2/3 innings of scoreless relief to earn the win. Camel starter Katie Baker (12-10) suffered the loss, allowing four runs on six hits, no walks and four strikeouts.
