DURHAM, N.C. – Redshirt junior Alexis Hein led the Camels with eight kills, while junior Mary Crema bolstered the defense with 15 digs as Campbell took a 3-0 (25-16, 25-14, 25-17) win over North Carolina Central Friday night in the second match of the NCCU Invitational.
Freshman Summer Schuitema assisted on 14 Camel attacks in her first collegiate action, adding three digs, a block, kill, and service ace.
Hein registered five of her kills in the first set, as the Camels (1-0) only trailed once in the opening action.
"I thought it was a good first match of the season," head coach Greg Goral said. "Its nice to get the first one under our belt. We played really well and had really good energy throughout the game."
The Eagles (0-1) took an early 2-1 lead, but a kill from redshirt senior Jessica Groen and two from Hein gave the Camels a two-point edge, and Campbell led for the remainder of the set.
The largest run of the first set was five points to put the Camels up 19-11, after two errors by the Eagles, a CU service ace, and two Camel kills.
In the second set, the two teams traded points until the Camels scored four straight to lead 8-5 with kills from Groen and junior Katelyn Layden.
Campbell kept the lead for the remainder of the set, breaking the score open with a six-point sprint, 21-10, led by two aces from Layden.
CU clinched its first win of the season after battling with the Eagles in the third set, as neither team led by more than three until a Campbell block and kill, and three NCCU errors put the Camels up 22-16. The Camels sealed the win with a McKenzie Fell kill and an ace from Rebecca Ramirez.
Kelsey Murphy led the Eagles with nine kills and Alice Genna tabbed 11 assists.
Campbell continues play in the NCCU Invitational on Saturday, taking on Wofford at 10 a.m. and Valparaiso at 3 p.m.
