BUIES CREEK, N.C. - Campbell men's soccer is set to open the regular season on Friday evening with a trip to UNCG, with a kickoff time set for 8 p.m. at the UNCG Soccer Stadium.
The match will serve as the regular season opener for both sides. The Spartans posted a 1-0-1 record in preseason matches, defeating Guilford College 8-0 and earning a 1-1 draw with Liberty. Both matches were hosted at UNCG.
Campbell did not come away with a win in the preseason, but kept all three matches close. The Camels fell 2-1 at Appalachian State, 2-0 at NC State and 3-1 against George Mason at the Eakes Athletics Complex.
Junior Pepe Rangel netted the first score of the preseason for Campbell on a penalty kick late in the match against the Mountaineers, and Reafe Anderson found an early equalizer against George Mason in the final exhibition tilt.
Redshirt freshman goalkeeper Matthew Mozynski played all 90 minutes in goal in each of the last two matches and totaled 241 minutes between the posts in the preseason. The Bellingham, Mass., native made four saves in each match for a total of 12.
The Camels trail UNCG in the all-time series between the two North Carolina opponents, posting a 4-14-3 record against the Spartans. In the last two meetings, however, Campbell has earned a pair of ties, including a 2-2 stalemate after 110 minutes in Buies Creek last season.
UNCG is led by senior Austin Miller who netted a goal in each of the Spartans' exhibition outings. Freshman Tommi Gardarsson found the back of the net twice against Guilford and junior Jacques Francois also added a goal against Guilford.
The Spartans were picked fourth in the preseason Southern Conference coaches' poll and finished third in the league last fall.
Following Friday's contest, Campbell will have just over a week off before welcoming Loyola (Md.) for the 2014 home opener at the Eakes Athletics Complex. That match is scheduled for a 6 p.m. kickoff next Saturday, Sept. 6.
