Campbell opens conference play at UNC Asheville Wednesday

BUIES CREEK, N.C. – Campbell women's soccer will travel to UNC Asheville to open Big South Conference play Wednesday night at 5 p.m. The Camels have posted a 4-5-0 all-time record against the Bulldogs.

"We had a pretty solid non-conference season," head coach Stuart Horne said. "Wins, losses and ties taken away, we had some really good outings. Some of the goals we gave up weren't necessarily because of the other team's work but more by our mistakes. There's definitely a bonus in that because it's something that we can fix."

The Camels (2-4-1) fell to East Carolina Sunday, 1-0, to end their 2014 non-conference schedule. Sammy Lawson recorded eight saves on 16 shots from the Pirates, a new career high for the junior goalkeeper.

Lawson (1-3-0) has tallied 25 saves on the season and has a .862 save percentage and 1.00 goals against average.

"There's always something good to take out of every game," Horne said. "Ending the way we did against East Carolina, it was still a good game, and we were just unlucky to score.

"I'm comfortable with where we are, and I'm comfortable heading into conference."

Sophomore midfielder Payton Ormsby continues to lead the Camels in scoring with five points (2 goals, 1 assist. Redshirt junior Ashley Clark holds the team lead with 17 shots.

UNC Asheville (5-3-0) clinched its fifth win of the season on Sunday, defeating Alabama A&M, 3-2, in double overtime.

Freshman forward Carolina Houser leads the Bulldogs in scoring with eight points (3 goals, 2 assists); senior midfielder Amanda Dailor and senior forward Kaitlyn Eckert have both tallied seven points for the team.

"I'm sure Asheville is going to be pumped up," Horne said. "They're coming off a good non-conference win, so they have a bit of momentum coming in. I'm sure they're feeling strong."

Campbell's match against UNC Asheville will be the first of two conference matches this week. The Camels open their in-conference home slate against Liberty Saturday at 1 p.m. at Eakes Athletic Complex.

"We really don't have to force being focused with this group," Horne said. "We've been talking about conference play since I got here, and it's no secret to them that this is when it gets real."
