Box Score NORFOLK, Va. - Sophomore midfielder Payton Ormsby deflected a ball into the Old Dominion net with 2:12 remaining in regulation to force overtime, eventually ending draw Thursday night at ODU. The match marked the second consecutive game the Camels have played a double overtime game.
Ormsby applied pressue on goalkeeper Meredith Lenox as she played the ball in the box; it found the Chesapeake, Va. native's side, sending the ball sailing into the Monarchs' net. The goal was Ormsby's first of the season and gives her three points in five games.
"I knew the goalkeeper was a little shaky when the ball hit her feet," Ormsby said. "I saw my chance and I ran as fast as I could to get in front of her and try to block the shot, try to anything I could. It ended up hitting me right in the side and going in with two minutes left. Putting our team in overtime was awesome in front of all my family and friends."
ODU's Jessie Klamut put the Monarchs ahead in the 6th minute of the match with a laser from left side of the net, past outstretched junior goalkeeper Alexis Connors. Klamut drove past sophomore midfielder Murita Storey, who fell down on the play, and the rest of the Camel defense en route to scoring her second goal of the season.
The Camels struggled early to find any momentum as they were outshot by ODU, 7-1, through the first 45 minutes. Campbell improved in the second, tallying 7 shots compared to ODU's 11. For the match ODU led 21-10 in shots, but only 5-4 on goal.
"The only reason we got to overtime was because of hard work," head coach Stuart Horne said "There was nothing tactical, it was just hard work. Payton [Ormsby], if she's not pressing the goalkeeper we're out of here an hour ago."
Connors (1-0-1) tallied four saves, many late from point blank range as the Monarchs pushed for a backbreaking goal, but Connors continued to give the Camels a chance.
"The kids, they're hard workers," Horne said. "I'll put their work up against anyone in the country. I'd rather have x-and-o problems than kids that don't want to fight and work."
With the tie, the Camels move to 1-2-1 on the season. The Camels will return home Sept. 13 to take on in-state foe Western Carolina at Eakes Athletics Complex; kickoff is slated for 7 p.m.
"We always have a lot of heart, a lot of fight, and I think we just really knew what we were up against and just tried to go out with a bang," Ormsby said.
