Camels still atop combined leader board at Program Challenge

PAWLEYS ISLAND, S.C. – Campbell owns a six-stroke edge in the combined team standings after Monday's second round of the Golfweek Program Challenge.  The Campbell men and women are a combined even par heading into Tuesday's final 18 holes.

CU (289-293—582) owns a two-stroke edge in the women's team standings over Furman (293-291—584) at the par-71, 6213-yard Caledonia Golf & Fish Club.  The Campbell men (284-278—562) are in fourth place, nine strokes off the pace of leader Jacksonville (280-273—553) on the par-72, 6926-yard True Blue Plantation layout.

Campbell (Even) sits in front of Old Dominion (+6), Gardner-Webb (+15) and Furman (+18) in the combined standings.  The 54-hole event matches men's and women's teams from 12 schools from around the country at Caledonia (women) and True Blue Plantation (men).  The combined men's and women's scores from each program are added at the end of the event to determine the overall champion.

CU has won each of the three previous combined men's and women's Program Challenge events.  Campbell won the stroke play women's title in both 2012 and 2013 after claiming the inaugural men's stroke play tourney in 2011.

At 23-under-par, Jacksonville (280-273—553) holds a two-stroke edge over Old Dominion (277-278—555) entering the final 18 holes.  Valparaiso (273-284—557) is third, followed by Campbell (284-278—562), Gardner-Webb (276-290—566) and Jacksonville State (279-287—566).

Campbell sophomore Craig Hornberger and junior Mikko Lehtovuori both shot collegiate career-low rounds of 6-under 66 Monday to move into a tie for fifth place at 7-under-par 137.

A native of Lancaster, Pa., Hornberger made 7 birdies and one bogey and played the back nine holes at 5-under-par Monday to eclipse his previous career-best by three strokes (a 2-under 69 at last year's Wolfpack Intercollegiate). Through 36 holes, he has played the par-3 holes at 2-under, tied for 2nd-best in the 60-golfer field.

Lehtovouri's bogey-free second round featured six birdies.  The native of Lahti, Finland has played the par-5 layouts at 7-under through two days, the 2nd-lowest score in the event.  Monday's 66 matched the score he posted at the 2013 Wolfpack Intercollegiate on a par-71 layout.

Franck Medale of Jacksonville (69-65—134) and Bryce Howell of Furman (65-69—134) share the individual lead at 10-under-par, one stroke in front of Valparaiso's Nick Seitz (70-65—135).

Campbell sophomore Gaston Bertinotti is tied for 24th place at 1-under 143 (70-73), while red-shirt freshman Jeremy Nevius is tied for 32nd (72-73—145) in his collegiate debut.  Junior Alvaro Veiga is tied for 57th (74-74—152).

The Campbell men will start Tuesday's final round at 7:40 a.m. from the first tee at True Blue paired with Gardner-Webb and Jacksonville State.  Live scoring is available at Golfstat.com.
