BUIES CREEK, N.C. - Trailing by four points with 2:31 remaining in overtime, Campbell (11-6, 6-2 BSC) used a 6-0 run to defeat Radford (8-9, 5-3 BSC) 65-62 on Alumni Day Saturday afternoon inside Gore Arena.
The win was Campbell's first overtime contest of the season and gives the Lady Camels a 4-0 record against Big South opponents inside Gore Arena during the 2014-15 season.
Senior Summer Leverette matched her career high with 19 points, 15 of which came in the second half and overtime. Freshman Summer Price extended her streak of double-digit scoring games to five with 18 points, and redshirt junior RaeChaun Edwards (11 points) and sophomore Amanda Coffer (10 points) completed the quartet in double figures. Edwards also recorded her third consecutive game with eight assists.
For the game, Campbell shot 24-of-62 (38.7 percent) from the field and hit five of its 16 (31.3 percent) three-pointers. Radford went 22-of-52 (42.3 percent) from the floor and was 13-of-17 (76.5 percent) from the charity stripe.
Ayana Avery led the Highlanders with 19 points and Jordynn Gaymon added 12 more. Janayla White led all players with 11 rebounds.
Both sides played closely over the first four minutes, with the Lady Camels nearly matching the Highlanders basket for basket, but Radford's Avery knocked down a three-pointer with 12:06 on the clock to extend the Highlanders' lead to 12-8.
Facing the four-point hole midway through the half, Campbell reeled off an 11-0 run over the next four and a half minutes. Price keyed the run with five points and Coffer added four more as the Lady Camels emerged with a 19-12 lead at the 7:47 mark.
Radford responded with a 6-0 run of its own in the closing minutes of the half, twice cutting Campbell's advantage to a single point. On the Lady Camels' final shot of the half, Coffer knocked down a three-pointer from the top of the circle to make it 29-25 heading into the locker room.
Trailing 38-32 early in the second half, Radford used an 8-0 run spanning three and a half minutes to grab its first lead since being ahead 12-10 in the opening frame. Four different scorers found the basket during the run for the Highlanders, punctuated by White's layup with 10:26 remaining that gave Radford a 40-38 advantage.
With three ties over the next four minutes and neither team pulling ahead by more than two points, Campbell found an offensive spark with seven minutes remaining, going on an 11-0 run to open up its first double-digit lead of the night, 56-46, at the 4:57 mark. Edwards punctuated the run with a three-pointer from the right side to build the 10-point lead.
The Highlanders answered with 11 unanswered points of their own, but a free throw by senior Kiera Gaines with 40 seconds to play tied the game at 57-57. After Radford could not convert on its end, Gaines had a contested jumper at the buzzer that fell short, sending the game to overtime.
After falling behind 61-57 midway through the overtime period, Campbell fired off six unanswered points to take a 63-61 lead with just 31 seconds remaining. Edwards finished off the run with a steal and a layup to put the Lady Camels ahead late in the contest.
A pair of free throws from Edwards and Price iced the game in the final seconds for Campbell, who came away with the 65-62 victory.
Campbell will be back in action in Conway, S.C., at Coastal Carolina on the first leg of a three-game road swing on Tuesday at 7:00 p.m. The Lady Camels lead the all-time series against the Chanticleers 23-17, but Coastal Carolina holds a 10-8 advantage in matchups played on its home court.
